!The Free Cities

The nine Free Cities of Essos occupy the western region of Essos and have the most contact and trade with the Seven Kingdoms of Westros. Each city is independent of the other and have their own unique culture, but they do share some cultural similarities due to their shared past as Valyrian colonies, with the exception of Braavos. The nine cities are Braavos, Lorath, Lys, Myr, Norvos, Qohor, Pentos, Tyrosh, and Volantis.

!!!Tropes related to the Free Cities:
* CityOfAdventure: Braavos.
* CityOfCanals: Braavos design is loosely based on Venice.
* FantasyCounterpartCulture: Loosely based on the medieval Italian city-states (including Italian-sounding names) and some elements of Ancient Greek culture, with Braavos being a CityOfCanals like Venice and Volantis having an oligarchical form of democracy. They even speak a language descended from Old Valyrian.
* MerchantCity: Braavos.

* BrutalHonesty: Got him the job of First Sword of Braavos. When he was invited to see the Sealord after the previous First Sword died, the Sealord asked him what he thought of his RightHandCat, which was supposedly from some far-off exotic land. Syrio said that he'd seen a thousand cats just like it in the alleys of Braavos. The Sealord made him First Sword immediately, as he saw what the cat truly was (just a cat), spoke the truth and didn't try to win favor through flattery.
* EccentricMentor: He has some weird training methods, such as having Arya catch cats or practice while blindfolded, but they work.

-->''"I swear before the Mother of Mountains as the stars look down in witness!"''

A powerful Dothraki warlord Daenerys is arranged to wed early in ''A Game of Thrones''. They are very much in love by the time they discover their unborn son, Rhaego, is destined to be The Stallion who Mounts the World. He is uninterested in humoring her brother Viserys or his dream of conquering Westeros, [[spoiler: eventually killing him after he pisses Drogo off one time too many]]. However, once Dany's life is endangered by one of Robert Baratheon's assassins, Drogo has a new passion for crossing The Narrow Sea, sacking Westeros, and taking her family's Iron Throne.

!Slaver's Bay

Situated in the middle southern coast of Essos, Slaver's Bay is the hub of all slave trade in Essos. Built from the remnants of the Ghiscari Empire, each of the three slave cities in Slaver's Bay focus on different kinds of slaves: Astapor produces the warrior Unsullied, Yankai trains pleasure slaves, while Meereen produces artisans and pit fighters. Each city is ruled by an elite upper class of slave traders and ancient families.

!!!Tropes related to Slaver's Bay.
* AnimalMotifs: The Ghiscari call themselves "The Sons of the Harpy," after the heraldic harpy of old Ghis. [[spoiler:The villanous LaResistance[=/=]TheRemnant formed against Daenerys' government in Meereen is known as the Sons of the Harpy and its rumored leader who may or not be Hizdahr zo Loraq is known as The Harpy.]]
** The Brazen Beasts of Mereen all wear bronze animal masks. A number of people wonder if they wear the same masks or switch them up. The masks of a group of Brazen Beasts have symbolic significance when [[spoiler:Shavepate's men all wear locust masks during their coup to reference the poisoned locusts meant for Dany]].
* LesCollaborateurs: The shavepates are citizens of Meereen who side with Daenerys's conquering regime. They are considered traitors by the [[TheRemnant Sons of the Harpy]].
* CruellaToAnimals: The Ghiscari, from their favorite foods to their fondness for BeastlyBloodsports (although they like [[GladiatorGames the human kind just as much]]).
* FantasyCounterpartCulture: They are reminiscent of other ancient Phoenician city-states, particularly Tyre and Sidon
* ImpracticallyFancyOutfit: Ghiscari are quite fond of the trope. They wear elaborate hairstyles sculpted into bizarre shapes, requiring their soldiers to wear giant helmets to avoid ruining their hair. Nobles wear toga-like outfits that are designed so that you have to hold it together with one hand to keep it from falling off. In this case, the clothing is impractical by design, as it shows the wearer doesn't have to work or do much of anything for himself. The slave soldier companies of the region have gotten so used to fighting mock-battles against each other that they wear utterly ridiculous battlegear even into real fights - one company wears stilts, another fights chained together wrist-to-wrist and ankle-to-ankle.
* ThemeNaming: The ruling elites of Astapor, Yunkai and Meereen are known as, respectively, the Good Masters, the Wise Masters and the Great Masters.
* VestigialEmpire: The Ghiscari Empire, most of which was destroyed by Valyria 5000 years ago. New Ghis and the city-states of Slaver's Bay consider themselves descended from the old empire.
