** Haley's job interview really must be elaborated on: first, she refuses to take "no" for an answer when the secretary tells her to leave because the boss is being a diva. Then, when asked to name five things wrong with the secretary's outfit (and spurred on by said secretary being defensive and claiming she's dressed better than Haley), she ''effortlessly'' names said five things in rapid succession of each other, earning her new boss' respect and approval.

No meta example, see this query.

* In a meta-sense, Adam Devine playing Andy could be considered one considering that it's PlayingAgainstType. When he was approached by the ''Modern Family'' writers to play Andy, he was hesitant to play such a nice and sweet guy, as he had never done that before. However, he impressed the producers so much that they wrote his character into more episodes over multiple seasons, and he has since emerged as an integral character of the show.
* ''Meta'' again, but the fact that, with the exception of Sarah, the show hired teenagers to play teenagers. It's extremely refreshing to see kids that are similar to the audience.

* Meta Example: When Ed O'Neill was considering taking the role of Jay (after going back on his own desire to not be in sitcoms anymore because he fell in love with the script) his agent tried to talk him out of it, saying that he wouldn't make as much money as they had offered Craig T. Nelson (the original choice for Jay). O'Neill's response? "We'll make up for it; this show is going to be a hit". He was utterly right.

* When Haley, Phil and Claire accidentally lock themselves out of the house with the twins left inside, Haley doesn't panic even as she vocalises her concern that the babies could roll over and fall (also showing her knowledge of baby development stages). She gets onto the roof from a van and into a partially open window ''in 30 seconds'' (likely utilising her skills from when she used to sneak in and out as a teen).

* Phil's plan to scare Claire in "The Last Halloween".
** To elaborate, Phil sold a house to a European couple who wouldn't move into it for a while. Phil takes advantage of this by pretending that the house is occupied by a creepy old woman named Ida Mae. This involved dressing as the old woman so Claire would see him on her jugging route while making sure he was just far away so she couldn't recognize him, and even made his alias seem more life-like by having her join the neighborhood association and put up flyers for her lost dog. When Phil tricks Claire into going into the house, she finds a skeleton dressed in granny clothing and the turns around to see Phil dressed in his Ida Mae outfit, scaring the daylights out of Claire.
*** For extra points, [[BatmanGambit Phil pretended to try an unimpressive prank on Claire that day just so she would be caught off guard by his real prank.]]
** Claire herself [[HoistByHisOwnPetard turns this on Phil]] by telling him that now that she sees how exciting their life can be even when the kids move out, she will be getting her revenge on him in the future.

* When a rival sauce maker steals Gloria's recipe and beats her to the patent office, Phil saves the day with his knowledge of real estate, finding several illegal modifications to the woman's house just by looking in the front door and blackmailing her into pulling the ripoff sauce.
