* BigBad: Fire Lord Ozai is the series' prime antagonist, but each season also has its own chief villains:
** Book 1: [[SmugSnake Zhao]] and [[AntiVillain Prince Zuko]], in a BigBadEnsemble sense. While Zuko is more persistent, Zhao is more dangerous, ultimately overshadowing Zuko in his invasion of the North.
** Book 2: Princess Azula for the entire book, [[spoiler:with Long Feng]] for a StoryArc starting late in the season and extending towards the end. [[spoiler:Azula overshadows and takes over from Long Feng without even trying.]]
** Book 3: Ozai, though Azula is still more prominent as TheDragon.

* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: It's eventually a source of some angst, but early on the kids have free rein to go on adventures because their parents are gone. The other Airbenders died fighting the Fire Nation, while Katara and Sokka's mother was killed in a raid. Their father went off to fight two years before the series began, and they don't know whether or not he's still alive. [[spoiler:Sokka only finds him again toward the end of season 2.]] Toph is the exception, running away from her wealth family to join the Gaang -- her parents eventually send a pair of bounty hunters to round her up.

* HedgeMage: Katara starts out the series as a self-taught waterbender due to being the last remaining one in the Southern Water Tribe, meaning there was no one available to teach her. Part of her starting motivation is her desire to find an experienced waterbending teacher, and it isn't until the Gaang manages to make it to the Northern Water Tribe that she is able to get formal training and is declared a proper master at the end of the first season.

** Avatar Aang, along with any Avatar, has this as their job description, since their duty is to maintain peace and balance in the world.
** Iroh is the wisest hero, and the leader of the Order of the White Lotus. [[spoiler:He retires at the end of the series, leaving the role to Zuko, who shares the position with Aang after being crowned Fire Lord and taking his father's place]].
