Final Yamato does make references to the Bolar and Galman conflict so it's still evident that a truncated version of the events in Yamato III still occured.

Compare to SpaceCarrierBlueNoah (aka Thunder Sub in English-speaking countries) for a thematically similar anime, with which it even shares a producer, Yoshinobu Nishizaki. The rumor goes that it was created because Nishizaki was at the time involved in copyright dispute about ''Yamato'' with LeijiMatsumoto, and wanted to have a [[CaptainErsatz back-up property]] to capitalize on ''Yamato'''s runaway success should he lose the legal battle.
