[[DarkSkinnedRedHead Momo]] has had a crush on Toji for years, but has kept it a secret for years on account of a rumor that Toji considered dark skin and blond hair to be a turn-off. Her first time telling someone about this crush was during the course of turning down [[ChivalrousPervert Kairi]], unknowingly within earshot of Toji and [[AlphaBitch Sae]]. Toji confessed his love to Momo, they got together, Sae used assorted {{Magnificent Bastard}}ry to try to break them up and generally make Momo's life miserable, Kairi consistently proves a SpannerInTheWorks to Sae's schemes, and Momo starts falling for Kairi.

And it gets [[LoveDodecahedron even more confusing]] from there.
----
!!This show provides examples of:

* AesopAmnesia: Dear God, Sae ''is'' this trope. After being turned down by the guy she's claimed to love (at the time), being victimized by her former victims, ''and'' being treated as a friend by '''MOMO''', given enough time, she goes back to her jealous, manipulative ways.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Momo is bullied by Sae for the majority of the story, though Sae lies to people about this, trying to make it seem like [[WoundedGazelleGambit it's Momo who's bullying her.]] Also, Momo is put down by her classmates and other people for having tan skin and [[strike:bleached]] red hair, because they believe this means she is a [[SubculturesInJapan kogal]].
* AlphaBitch: Sae.
* AttemptedRape: Both Momo and Sae have been victims of this.
* AttentionWhore: Sae.
* {{Bishonen}}: Jigoro, Toji, Kairi, and Ryo.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Sae is one of the greatest examples of this trope in all of anime.
* CanNotSpitItOut
* ChessmasterSidekick: [[spoiler:This is about as [[HeelFaceTurn Face]] as Sae gets.]]
* ChivalrousPervert: Kairi.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Momo towards Toji at times. Sae is much more aggressive about this towards any guy that captures her attention, namely Toji and Ryo. Also, both Toji and Kairi could be seen as male versions of this trope in regards to Momo, and Jigoro to Sae.
** Then there's Kairi's bitchy trio of ClingyJealousGirl's who hold nothing but pure hatred towards Momo.
* CovertPervert: Momo, even though she violently berates Kairi for his perverted tendencies, it has been suggested that she is secretly perverted herself.
* DarkSkinnedRedHead: Momo, as a result of her dedication to the swim team. (At least, in the anime.) See below.
** DarkSkinnedBlonde: She's this in the manga.
* DubInducedPlothole: [[spoiler: A slip in the dub causes Toji to casually mention to Momo that Sae is blackmailing him with pictures, which she has never heard about til now. You can tell it's a mistake when Momo actually finds out a few episodes later and confronts Sae about it.]]
* {{Fanservice}}: Much more of this in the manga than in the anime.
* GreenEyedMonster: This defines Sae.
* HiddenEyes
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: At least twice each for Toji and Kairi.
* IdiotBall: It takes Kairi essentially setting Sae up to confess everything she's ever done to Momo for Toji to finally realize how much he's been lied to. Somewhat justified in that it's mentioned that Toji is a bit on the naive side but he showed a distressing lack of sense towards his own relationship.
* ItMeantSomethingToMe
* LoveDodecahedron
* ManipulativeBitch: Sae, again.
* MegatonPunch: Momo, [[DopeSlap frequently to Kairi.]]
* MoreThanMindControl: Sae loves doing this.
* OffModel
* PoorCommunicationKills: A lot of the relationship problems in the show could've been resolved very quickly if not for this.
* RapePortrayedAsRedemption: Played with. When Sae gets put in danger of it as revenge for her putting Momo in the same situation previously, Momo rescues her as soon as she finds out. [[spoiler:Being rescued for a second time plays it straight, though.]]
* SecondLove: [[spoiler:Momo ends up with Kairi instead of her first love, Toji]].
* StalkerWithACrush: Sae, repeatedly and to extremes.
* TheGlomp: Toji to Momo sometimes, and Sae to whoever she may ''like'' at the moment.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Both Sae ''and'' Momo can be one or the other at times.
* {{Tsundere}}: Momo again, without a doubt.
* UnwittingPawn: Toji, then Jigoro.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: Sae's favorite tactic; she's even the TropeNamer.
* WrongGuyFirst: Sort of. More like Best Guy Last.
* {{Yandere}}: Sae, to a certain degree, depending on your view.
** As well as Kairi's trio of {{ClingyJealousGirl}}s.
* ZettaiRyouiki: Momo wears grade A in episode 9.

* RapeAsRedemption: Averted. When Sae gets put in danger of it as revenge for her putting Momo in the same situation previously, Momo rescues her as soon as she finds out. [[YourMileageMayVary Arguably inverted]], because the rescue makes Sae even more bitter and nasty, leading to the [[UnfortunateImplications ugly implication]] that Momo shouldn't have rescued her.
** YourMilageMayVary, as some people see Kairi admitting to Sae that he set it up to get back at her for she did to Momo as justifying her anger (and she was too mad to believe that Momo didn't have anything to do with it).
