* In ''[[http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Fanon:A:TLAR Avatar: the Last Airbender Revisited]]'', the interpretation of the Avatar is a bit different. The Avatar Spirit is, er, was a resident of the Spirit World that aspired to create a physical world that would teem with life. Once it had crafted the earth and humanity, it blessed humanity with a genetic trait that would allow a being to manipulate the molecules of elements, otherwise known as bending. The gift of bending divided humanity into four peoples that were isolated from each other, the Air, Water, Earth and Fire civilizations. It selected one airbender to be its host, so that it could teach the Air people the principles that it believed humanity needed to be taught. Once its host had died, it began a cycle that continued for generations by choosing to inhabit one of the Water people next, then one of the Earth people, and lastly one of the Fire people. Once this cycle had finished, it repeated itself. After each cycle completion, the role of the Spirit is taken over by the soul of one of the last generation's hosts, i.e. after the first cycle, the spirit of the first air host became the new Avatar, then after the second cycle, the spirit of the second water host became the Avatar, etc. Although the Spirit is a full-on RealityWarper, the hosts are not. The hosts can only have limited access to the Spirit's massive power reservoir by going into the Avatar State, which can only be achieved by severing all of one's earthly ties, also known as the Transcendence ritual. Beings that take the role of the Spirit and have undergone Transcendence have difficulty relating to entities of the physical realm, which can eventually go from bad to worse as ({{Foreshadowing}}) the Spirit loses all empathy for humans and embodies A God Am I. Problem is that theory is jossed by canon.

* ''Fanfic/BinkyPie'': Pinkie Pie ends up inspiring a "Church of the Pink Pony of Death" on the Literature/{{Discworld}} while working as Death's new steed/assistant. Since GodsNeedPrayerBadly is in full effect on the Discworld, Pinkie Pie eventually ends up ascending to godhood. Complicating matters is the fact that she had previously been standing in for Death after he got trapped in Equestria due to a magical mix-up...
* ''Fanfic/TheBridge'':
** Grand King Ghidorah declares that with his great power, he is a god and can do whatever he wants and kill whenever he wants.
** Bagan calls himself a god, and even dismisses Grand King Ghidorah and Legion, saying they are just kings and queens which are lower than a deity like himself. Unlike most claiments, [[PhysicalGod He has a point.]]
** The evil Ultraman Belial says the Ultra race should have ruled over all other races as gods instead of being mere protectors. Since they refuse to be gods, he will take over and be the only God.
* ''Fanfic/ChildOfTheStorm'' has Arnim Zola, by now a computer consciousness, who states this trope to Tony Stark in chapter 74 when [[spoiler: he possesses Avengers Tower and all the machinery in it]], which he says, "[This] makes me nothing less than your ''god."'' Tony has a salvo of snark ready, of course.
** In the finale of the first book, Harry sharply repudiates this mindset in a strange PreAsskickingOneLiner: "I never ''wanted'' power. I never ''wanted'' to be god. And I am ''done'' playing."
** And then, in the sequel, there is a very familiar round of boasting on this theme [[MassOhCrap that makes everyone's blood run cold.]]
--->'''I AM LIFE. I AM FIRE. NOW AND FOREVER...''' '''''I. AM. PHOENIX!'''''
** Actually defied (in general) by Asgardians, whose relationship with godhood is... complicated. They were originally SufficientlyAdvancedAliens before the formation of Yggdrasil, which took them out of the mortal universe. However, they are also more mortal than many of the other pantheons -- they age and die in a way most other quasi-deities don't, even if it takes them more than five thousand years to do it.
* ''Fanfic/DeathNoteEquestria'': Initially averted, as Twilight views herself as a NecessarilyEvil murderer, but doesn't view herself as a god. However, after [[spoiler: L's death]] at the end of the second season, she dives right into this — she decides to set up Kira as a mythological figure of evil in order to scare anyone out of performing evil ever again, while [[RunningBothSides also]] leading the "resistance" against Kira. She figures that such a position on both sides would make her a goddess.
* ''Fanfic/ChildrenOfAnElderGod'': After [[spoiler:the main characters fought the [[{{Robeast}} MP-Evangelions]], Yui seized the power of the [[EldritchAbomination Outer Gods]] to ascend to godhood and recreate reality according her will.]]
* ''Fanfic/DisneysWarACrossoverStory'' has the Horned King, from ''WesternAnimation/TheBlackCauldron'', who already had a bad case of that in his debut but didn't get better here. In the end, he [[spoiler:''does'' briefly becomes the "Horned God" when he merges with Chernabog]].
* In ''Fanfic/DivineBlood'', this is averted as Tessa Testarossa became the first Ainur to ensure the psychological and spiritual survival of her people against things like [[TheVirus this fic's version of Kodachi Kuno]] and to serve as a message to the Gods and Demons that humanity can't be pushed around anymore. She still insists on being kept in the normal chain of command and suggested that having a full Ainur division would be a mistake and point of vulnerability.
* ''Fanfic/DungeonKeeperAmi'': Zarekos is in the process of ascending to godhood when Mercury encounters him. This grants him, an already quite powerful vampire, additional powers such as the ability to revive once when killed in battle. However, the trope is {{defied}}:

"No, Keeper, he was not that delusional. Planning to become one, perhaps, but well aware of his own limitations."
* ''Fanfic/IAgainstIMeAgainstYou'': PlayedForLaughs when Church uses his newly discovered abilities [[spoiler: as the Alpha A.I.]] to take control of an Insurrection base, briefly letting the power go to his head.
* ''Fanfic/JusticeLeagueOfEquestria'': In ''Mare of Steel'', [[BigBad General Zod]] feels that Kryptonians are gods compared to normal ponies and [[EvilCannotComprehendGood doesn't understand why Rainbow Dash/Supermare (violently) disagrees with him]].
* ''Fanfic/RWBYEpicOfRemnant'': Salem calls herself a goddess and reveals she plans to wipe out humanity until a select few are left who will worship her out of fear until generations pass and their descendants will know nothing but worshiping her and the Grimm.
* ''Fanfic/ThousandShinji'': The story ends with [[spoiler:Shinji, Asuka, Rei and Misato ascending to becoming the new ''[[TabletopGame/Warhammer40000 Chaos gods]]'']].

* ''Fanfic/HarryPotterAndTheMethodsOfRationality'': Harry's ultimate goal is essentially to become a god. Or, as he words it, "To understand everything important there is to know about the universe, apply that knowledge to become omnipotent, and use that power to rewrite reality because I have some objections to the way it works now." This statement is ''slightly'' LessDisturbingInContext, in the sense that Harry's a WellIntentionedExtremist with a strong sense of right and wrong, but many readers are of the opinion that it would be better for the universe if he didn't pull this off.

[[AC: ''LightNovel/HaruhiSuzumiya'']]
* ''Fanfic/YouGotHaruhiRolled'': Being this a CrackFic, it is only natural that Haruhi and Sasaki both declare godly ambitions. * ''Fanfic/TheImmortalGame'': Ignoring the fact that most of the main villains and one of the protagonists are ''actual'' gods, the story ultimately has a subversion of this trope in the case of [[spoiler: Twilight Sparkle. She admits that by all definitions of the word, she ''is'' a god now.]]
* ''Fanfic/TheLunarRebellion'': This (or technically "A God's Avatar Am I") sums up the Avatar of Nightmare Moon's (formerly [[spoiler: ephor Bright Charger of Pegasopolis]]) worldview in a nutshell.
-->"I am an alicorn, a higher state of being. I am faster, stronger, smarter, and simply better in every conceivable way. I am Luna reborn, her will made flesh and Equestria’s liberation."
* ''Fanfic/TheNonBronyverse'': Discord proclaims himself a god in the AU story ''The Breaking of a Non-Brony''. TD also uses this in the AU story ''TD the Alicorn Princess'', but only to threaten Blueblood with it.
* ''Fanfic/OversaturatedWorld'': Indigo Zap reacts to her newfound powers of flight by deciding she has become a deity. This example is particularly insane, because (a) roughly a fifth of the entire human population has gained the ''exact same power set'' and (b) Sunset Shimmer, who is literally keeping the universe from falling apart, has taken up more of AGodIAmNot role despite being far, far more powerful.
* ''Fanfic/PagesOfHarmony'': Twilight Sparkle.
** After extracting the essence of the Elements of Harmony from her friends and analyzing their signatures, she intends to use her research and magic to [[spoiler: eradicate all beings in the universe -- and ''multiverse'', if it exists -- that don't have the genetic capacity for harmony, letting only the ones she judges as worthy being allowed to live, intending to train the survivors]]. ** As if that's not enough, in Chapter 12, the last chapter before the epilogue, she [[spoiler: absorbs the essence of all the Elements of Harmony and becomes an ethereal alicorn-like creature, declares herself to be "Harmony Incarnate", and performs a memory-alternation on Ponyville's population so they believe she's their Empress]].
* ''Fanfic/PonyPOVSeries'':
** [[BigBadWannabe The Valeyard]] (the [[BadFuture Dark World]] version of [[Series/DoctorWho the Doctor]]) has a serious case of this. He views himself as the ultimate being, above even [[TopGod the Elders]] Themselves. His ultimate plan is even to eventually [[TheStarscream steal Discord's power]] and use it to cast down the other gods so that he can rule the universe.
** Luna used to think like this (though to be fair, she ''is'' a god in this setting), to the point that she was offended that Her Father actually cared about the lives of mortals. Fortunately, He then put her through BreakTheHaughty, followed by her later actually spending time as a mortal, which changed her views.
** Makarov boasts that he is a god because of his ability to alter reality.
** At the end of the Wedding Arc, [[spoiler: it turns out the Chrysalis' EvilPlan all along was to become an alicorn, which occurs when [[NiceJobBreakingItHero the Elements of Harmony are used on her]]. Fortunately, she learns there's more to being a god than power, as the Elements force her to [[VillainousBSOD grow a conscience]], which triggers her final VillainousBreakdown.]]
* ''Fanfic/TheWorldIsFilledWithMonsters'':
** Blightweaver's worldview in a nutshell. It seems to believe that the world exists merely so that it can devour it, refers to other beings as "mortals" and "insects", and outright calls itself a god.
--->"Little insect," it said. "You think mortal weapons can harm me? Can harm a god?"
** Luna likewise sees and presents herself as a divine figure.
