Ununnilium: Took out Legacy Character, since it isn't quite the same; if Yugi had been Pharoah-Man and passed that down, it would've been.

  • Technically, Jaden/Judai is an arguable Legacy Character, since Yugi did pass him Winged Kuriboh as a sort of symbolic "passing of the torch'' to him as the main hero/godlike duelist.

Lale: That's what I thought. Like the Legacy Character entry says, Judai is an "old concept re-embodied in a brand-new character who took up the old mantle for a new generation." Anyone else think it can go back in?

Ununnilium: The problem is, it's not a separate identity being passed down, only a role as the main character.

Lale: Jason Todd became Robin; he didn't become Dick Grayson. Wally West became The Flash, not (Bart? Barry?) Allen...

Ununnilium: Exactly. Who does Judai become?

Lale: "The One Who Succeeds Yugi" according to the name of the first Japanese episode.

Ununnilium: Right. That's not an identity, that's a position, much like being promoted to Vice-President In Charge Of Marketing after the old guy retires. To put it in perspective, you wouldn't say a Jonas Quinn is a legacy character.

Lale: "Yu-Gi-Oh" means "King of Games," right? That's a title and a role- in other words, a legacy.

Ununnilium: But neither character is ever referred to as "Yu-Gi-Oh".

Really, I can see your point, but in my opinion, it's just way too borderline.

Lale: Somebody else jump in with a voice yay or nay and tip the scales, please!

Ununnilium: Please, before our brains implode!

mistressminako: Now that we're past the end of the series - Juudai is definitely intended to the (spiritual) successor to Yuugi as King of Card Games/Yuugiou, even if he's never named as such. It's a tropism which is carried through 5D as well, with Jack named as King right off the bat.

Viewtiful Jeff: My opinion is that until Judai is directly addressed as being "King of Games" by someone then I don't think he really qualifies as a Legacy Character. The intent for him to succeed Yugi is obvious, but he's not there yet.

Lale: The kid has acquired his own Split Personality Superpowered Evil Side. Safe to say he's fully succeeded his predecessor yet?

Viewtiful Jeff: Well, while they're similar on the surface, Haou and Yami's roles are both pretty different, to the point where I don't think you can say Haou is carrying any legacy of Yami's besides what he is on the most very basic level. Yami was supposed to be a way for tiny little Yugi to turn into this badass hero that sets villains on fire, and wins Children's Card Games with the greatest of ease. That, and he comes from the Millenium Puzzle, not Yugi's personality. Haou is essentially all of Judai's delightfully repressed emotions from the awesome parenting he got from his folks and the awesome friendship he got from Yubel, 'cept with super powers. For...some reason. Still haven't figured that part out.

SynjoDeonecros: It was Yubel's loving touch that gave Haou his powers, as some kind of gift for finally accepting Yubel's form of squeaky clean, happy-time affection. And I heard that they eventually get all cuddly-wuddly menage-a-troisey in Judai's head...My god, that kid's just one card away from being the Jeffrey Dahmer of Duel Monsters. Get him some Marylin Manson or something, jeez...

Lale: Now he has a past life. I'm sensing a pattern here...

SynjoDeonecros: Yeah, as one fan mentioned to me, Judai and Yubel are the Priest Seto and Kisara of GX. I'm still wondering where Johan fits into all of this; for some reason, his and Judai's comment of the other looking familiar during their first meeting keeps on sticking in my mind, like it should be significant.

Lale: Yeah, they've seen each other before... in the mirror.

KJMackley: Isn't the specific requirements of a Legacy Character to be that people know the name moreso then the person. Such as the dread pirate Roberts, the various Flash superheroes, Green Lanterns and probably others. So far Judai hasn't claimed to BE Yugi Moto, just implied to be his spiritual successor as hero of the show and impressive duelist. The gold medalist in wrestling wouldn't be called the legacy character of the previous gold medalist.

Lale: The discussion above is still open, but I have another suggestion. Most of the trope examples, not to mention the characters, are so over-the-top extreme yet without seeming cliche or cheap in a bad way to everyone. I think this show is So Bad, It's Good. ???

((Unrealblight)): Heh, I've never been editted any Wikia before, but I just wanted to mention how funny this sounded : "Yu-Gi-Oh GX is the story of the students’ adventures thwarting the plans of Big Bads who try to use the powers related to the real Duel Monsters’ world |to take over the world or something|."
Viewtiful Jeff: I was just wondering....is it a good idea to mention Judai's SuperpoweredEvilSide coming back when so far it's only been mentioned in previews?
Garyuu: I have no edits to make, just here to say HOLY CRAP, this series is pretty messed up.

Viewtiful Jeff: It really is amazing how quickly the series turned from lighthearted hijinks to the death-ridden turmoilfest it is now...I wonder if that makes it qualify for Death by Newberry Medal?

Lale: 80% of those deaths are null and void.

SynjoDeonecros: I'm more concerned about the cards Konami is bringing out for this season; I don't think anyone who's seen the latter half of this season wants to duel with a monster in their deck whose idea of sexual foreplay involves Inquisition-style torture and bloody Aztec-themed sacrifices to unholy primordial gods.Yubel's already on my top ten list of scariest fictional villains of all time, and I can just imagine the pre-teen duelist reactions to cracking open a booster pack and seeing that abomination to God and man staring back at them.

Viewtiful Jeff: That, my friend, is why Yubel's final form will be a Secret Rare. Besides, if the kiddies weren't already having nightmares from Scab-Scar Knight, Doll Chimera, Bloo-D, and all the other freaky crap this show has thrown at us, I don't think this'll push them over the edge.

SynjoDeonecros: Okay, so let me get this straight, as far as the fourth season goes: Judai is pissy and can't enjoy dueling, because of all the duels he was forced to engage in for the fate of his friends and/or the world/universe (nice Lampshade of the "Let's duel for the fate of reality" plot for the whole franchise, btw); Ryo's heart is giving out because his Cyberdark deck is feeding on his duel energy and forcing him to push harder to get more; Rei has become utterly worthless as a character, and Asuka has finally got it through her thick skull that Judai is in love with Johan; the main villain is Fubuki's Superpowered Evil Side who possessed his long-lost Ho Yay partner, and is sending out creepy Michael Jackson clones to molest the duelists of the world and make them vanish, and we still dunno what the bloody freaking hell happened at the Abandoned Dorm to make all those students disappear. Oh, and Yubel's now just useful as a power source for Judai and to fuse with Neos to form some sort of creepy Evil Hero Infernal Gainer rip-off, and we have GOD NEOS to anticipate. And it's being cut in half and replaced with some Akira rip-off because, supposedly, Judai's voice actor quit/got fired for asking for too much money, and they didn't feel like replacing him. Am I missing anything?

  • mistressminako: I think you got everything, but to be fair - 5D is a horrid amalgamation of more then just Akira working off its own ancient mythos (Nazca lines)

Heleentje: I've got nothing against the spoiler tags, but how long do they have to stay? Because season three had its last episode almost a year ago and the series has ended about five months ago. I understand the need for spoiler tags for dub viewers, but since {{4Kids}} apparently doesn't feel like actually dubbing the fourth season, do we have to keep them up indefinitely?

Lale: Those are for people who might not have seen a series/film yet, period. The fact that this is a dubbed anime is just a coincidence.

Fuck this shit—— Is there any reason we are using the Jap names instead of the English ones?

Because the Jaden's behavior and personality as well as the others in the English version is different from The originals. Also the dub was a Gag Dub so as to avoid confusion we use the japanese names, so people know what version we're talking about.

No, the English names should be used. Sure, it's different from the original show in several ways, but not to the point that it ends up being an ENTIRELY different version all together, regardless of what you think of the dub. Samurai Pizza Cats has a far more different dub but it's article still retains the English names.

Well they are as different as night and day. And Jaden and Judai do not have the same personality. Its not just that its different its a Gag Dub so quite literally a lot of the tropes listed on this page only really apply to the original version. If we used the English names and terms, then it would probably confuse people on what version we referring to. also very few people even saw the original Samurai Pizza Cats, which by the way isn't its real name. Also most of the tropes listed on that page apply to its english version.

Gavyn Sykes: I fail to see how Jaden and Juda don't have the same personality. Judai can be slightly more serious, but Jaden only seems less so due to his catchphrases and insistence on using puns. They're both IdiotHeroes. Say what you will, but the dub actually did a decent job at retaining his Deconstruction during Season 3, save for that "sent to the stars" shit.

That being said, I'd prefer not to use the English names, but I don't think it being a Gag Dub is a valid argument. It did seem like that sometimes. But there were times when they knew when to maintain the seriousness. I watched the entirety of the dub. Yes, it was Adaptation Decay and it did make some changes to many things. But someone who watched the dub first and then the original isn't going to have a hard time following it. Yeah, some things were changed, but not to the degree you're implying.

I have a question-Is that extremely genre savvy video really clips from the dub?! I don't watch the show, I just came across the page, watched the vid, and it seems pretty unbelievable.

Its really is from the actual dub, not surprisingly it was 4kids when they were at their worst so there wasn't much to expect. The English dub and the original Japanese version are really as different as night and day.

Gavyn Sykes: Blame Little Kuriboh. Other than that scene, the only character who consistently broke the fourth wall was Sho.
