From YKTTW

SAMAS: Before anyone asks: Yes, I probably will be naming the stage tropes after as many notable game stages as possible. Except for Ice World at least.

Corahs Uncle: What title would you suggest for an entry on aquatic game levels, another staple of Super Mario Bros.? Or does Super Drowning Skills already cover that?

SAMAS Super Drowning Skills is more about characters who inexplicably can't swim. I'm still thinking of a name here.

Andrew Leprich: There's also Down the Drain, but that's more about how water levels tend to suck, and not really about describing water levels themselves.

SAMAS: Well, I was planning on going back later for some of these to go more in depth about the features and problems of such levels, so we could just use that, or add it to whatever we decide on a name, and redirect. Down the Drain works as a stage to a point, but frankly I don't like it as a title for this at all.

SAMAS again: I was thinking Big Blue or Deep Blue for water levels. Big Blue could also be used for Island levels, too.

SAMAS: Someone PLEASE explain those loose titles.

Zeta: They're just placeholders, mostly. Although a few of them ARE actual platform game stage names.

SAMAS: I figured that much out. But I'm at a loss as to what some of them are supposed to be for.

Tanto: Seems to me that it's:

  • Big Baddie Castle -- stereotypical final level
  • Brinstar Depths -- ...? It's from Metroid, yes, but what's the trope? (This is misspelled on the main page, by the way -- only need one "h") -- SAMAS: Caves, I would guess.
  • Cloudcuckooland -- sky / clouds level. It's a decent name but possibly problematic in that we've already got Cloudcuckoolander, and the two tropes have no relation except their common source. -- SAMAS}: I was thinking more the really strange worlds that seem to have little to no sense why it's there in the first place, like the Starlight Speedway in Sonic CD, which looks like a giant brass instrument.
  • Ghost Ship -- self-explanatory
  • Indigo Plateau -- I know the reference, but have no idea what the trope is supposed to be. -- SAMAS: Maybe we would use it for mountainous/rocky areas? I think we could find a better name, though.
  • Itznotzerzitz Mine -- mine level. Needs less obscure name. -- SAMAS: Sounds kinda like it's supposed to say: "It's not hers, it's mine" I really think the underground worlds can be kept together, though.
  • Lavender Tower -- Again with the meaningless Pokemon references. Haunted tower, I guess? Could probably fold all the "haunted" locations into a single trope, with a note that it can coexist with other locations. -- SAMAS: We need a haunted world one anyway.
  • Pointless Maze -- self-explanatory. This is probably not necessary -- we've already got The Maze. Just move that here.
  • The Sewers -- ditto
  • Temple O Traps -- Temple / ruins level. I don't like this title, and will search for something better.
  • Volcanic Panic -- lava level. This could use a better name, but it isn't horrible.
  • Vice City -- The city in Wide-Open Sandbox games

In addition, I will add the theme park / carnival level and random Asian-flavored village in a Medieval European Fantasy game if someone can think of good names. Floating Continent is currently simmering in YKTTW.

Later: Ghost Ship is already a trope. Who knew? I find it kind of irritating that this page is linking to an entry that has no video game examples whatsoever on it, though. Yeesh.

Also, cut out the placeholder entries. Don't add it unless you intend to fill it in. Making the page all red looks bad. Add the placeholders here, and we'll add 'em to the main page as we finish 'em.

SAMAS: I agree. We should discuss trope names here, not just trying to use names to squat on a trope. If I come up with a trope, and think of a better name, I'm going to just use that.

Tanto: The reason I've got a problem with it is that if they're on the main page, it gives the impression that these are the "official" names, and most of the red ones are bland, confusing, not common enough to qualify, or too obscure.

HeartBurn Kid: For the inevitable ship level, how about Doom Ship? After the airships from Super Mario Bros. 3.

SAMAS: Doom Ship could work. Bonus points for fitting into the whole Doomy Dooms of Doom thing. Also, removed all the red links.

HeartBurn Kid: Added Down the Drain; we can discuss a name change if you like, but it's really the page for water levels right now.

Zeta: Pages needed:

  • The obligitory pirate's cove (which has become insanely popular since Po TC),
  • random dinosaur land (usually the videogame version of the Lost World),
  • fire/volcano land (may overlap with the last one),
  • the big city in every RPG with the most shops and best buyable items,
  • the level where you walk on clouds in the sky,
  • the mysterious floating castle and/or island,
  • the area where you have to sneak around in some sewers,
  • the casino/minigame area of RP Gs and platformers,
  • the mines,
    • the vast cave system illuminated by growing crystals,
  • the haunted ruins,
  • the spooky woods,
  • the random Japanese village,
  • the hub world that connects the others in platformers,
  • the random space level,
  • space as presented in shooters (packed to the brim with enemies and mosnters),
  • the haunted ship,
  • the advanced city of the future,
  • and the whimsical land based on toys or candy or food or music or what have you. *whew*

Diem: We need a category for the Giant Domestic Environment setting in games such as Micro Machines. I recommend the name Macro Zone in reference to Super Mario Land 2.

Diem: Hell, we need a category for Tiny Cities as well, like in Rampage.

Anonymous: Shouldnt there be a giant mushroom land as in mario and outland from wow?

This listing has given me an idea to rip all my videogame soundtracks, sort the music by setting type, and re-burn accordingly. So I could have "Lethal Lava Land: The Album" or what-have-you.
