That Other 1 Dude: I don't think that thing about Katara counts because she's not spelling out how she currently feels, but rather saying how she felt when he dad left.

Going by the same logic, removed the "I got angry" bit for Anakin.

That Other 1 Dude: And that thing about "The Beach" for much the same reasons.

You know, I distinctly remember Deanna Troi doing this ridiculously often, but for other characters. Can anybody come up with an example off the top of their head?

Morgan Wick:

  • Possible ur-example: In the Peanuts TV special "He's a Bully, Charlie Brown", Peppermint Patty says "My jealousy has overcome my reason!".
    • Made especially Narmtastic by the delivery of the child actor.
Wasn't "He's a Bully" the last of the Peanuts specials? Worst. Misuse. Of Ur-Example. Ever.

High Five: Great main picture. That makes me angry!

Big T: I'm not sure that the first example should be first. I would think that privilege should belong to the trope namer. And the way it was originally written, it didn't even sound like an example, so I wonder if it was even originally there. But I'm not sure if would be considered ok to move it, but I did at least edit it to make it seem more like an example. Here's the original (natter included):

  • An example that comes to mind is The Film of the Book The Golden Compass, which effectively attempts to cram way too much plot into roughly two hours, and constantly has all sorts of characters explaining out loud what is going on. In the beginning of the film, Lyra spends minutes telling a pointless boasting tale, but doesn't have the time to show that she and her best friends are, well, best friends. Instead she points this out by saying that they are. And many, many other examples.
    • She looked like she was threatening him into friendship.... This troper was scared... She really takes after her crazy mother, doesn't she?

Nornagest: Chainsawed the following examples for the following reasons.

** This is because it is The Film of the Book, and tries to cram quite a lot of plot into the short two hours. There are many other examples of the the characters explaining out loud what is going on.

Justifying Edit.

** It's not as though the characters have much in the way of expressions either.

Justifying Edit.

*** He's also supposed to be ridiculously melodramatic and overblown, since he's a parody of/homage to all those old cheesy sci-fi aliens that would show up and make declarations such as "Puny humans, you shall be added to our galactic empire!"

Justifying Edit.

* House has one of these in an early episode, where he shouts "I'M ANGRY!" at Cuddy. Of course, since he's generally raging, it would be very obvious he's angry even without him saying it, but the line just makes the scene a bit sillier.
** To be fair, the line that prompted that response was "You're shouting." He's explaining to Cuddy why he's shouting.

Not this trope.

* Spoofed in Signs; the scene where Mel Gibson's character tries to scare off an unknown intruder thus: "AAAHH!!! I AM INSANE WITH ANGER!"
** "I AM OUT OF MY MIND! IT'S TIME FOR AN ASS-WHOOPING!!!" firmly plants this one beyond parody and into straight-up Narm, as if it wasn't already.
** Neither parody nor narm; he just says all those things because he's a priest, and he really doesn't know how to "act" angry.

Not this trope.

Please elaborate.

* Justified in Princess Tutu. In the first season, Mytho often notes how he's feeling, telling other characters when he's feeling lonely, or that he feels a certain way when he sees them. This is because until that point he's literally been without his emotions, and this dialogue is Mytho thinking aloud and trying to sort out his feelings.

Aversions don't belong here.

* And let's not forget "I'm So Glad" by Cream, the chorus of which is: "I'm so glad, I'm so glad/I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm glad/I'm so glad, I'm so glad/I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm glad."
** Which is subverted. The song is how his girl has just left him and it's basically a case of Lyrical Dissonance

Not this trope.

* In Mass Effect, the Elcor are an entire species of life forms that punctuate every statement with this trope.

Already covered.

Is the Red vs Blue example really correct? I mean, Caboose did kill a lot of people. Doesn't that show he was angry?
There seem to be a lot of examples here which are just one character telling another in words that they feel a certain way, which may indeed be exactly how they clearly do feel, and they're just saying it out loud for one or another perhaps perfectly good reason. Surely these don't belong? Would a "this trope is not" in the description be a good idea?
Buh6173: Can we please leave this left-justified? It looks really ugly right-justified.
