Are there any non-Anime examples of this trope? I was thinking that Firefly might be one (mixture of sci-fi and western elements), and although it's not a TV series Stephen King's Dark Tower books have a lot of this (in one case it's literally Schizo Tech, as there's a monorail w/ a split personality).

I know that Batman the Animated Series had futuristic technology, but do to its' film noir style, it seemed to always be set in the 1930s ('30s cars, leather helmets for football players, etc.). Also, Wild Wild West could be a possibilty.

I think that the SNES RPG Chrono Trigger fits into this category, too. The time period called "1000 A.D." is sort of like a mix between Past and Modern times in that there are no cars, no cities, no television, characters still fight using bows and swords, and yet there are refridgerators, futuristic tech (Lucca's Telepods and Gato) and guns, as well. Dunno though, maybe they just couldn't accurately convey the present in 16-bit era RPGs...

Ununnilium: B:TAS doesn't count, since that's more a style thing. Chrono Trigger probably does, though. It's common in video games; Pokemon, for example, has it in both.

Airbud: This shows up on Star Trek and Stargate from time to time, mostly due to to the high number of Scavenger Worlds. One example is how the Athosians are a simple agrarian society, yet Teyla somehow has a fancy high-tech cigarette lighter. This is a staple of steampunk Victorian fiction, as well as archeological fiction (some of the ancient traps Indiana Jones faced were light and pressure-sensitive). Star Wars can be another example, with the light sabers and alien beasts of burden.

Citizen: I thought "Schizo Tech" would be about technology gone amok, but this entry seems to be all about Anachronistic Technology (or tech that has the appearance of such)...

Ununnilium: Well, yeah. This is just a shorter way of saying the same thing, IMHO; it's a technological level that seems to be crazily, randomly distributed between two different eras.

Andrea: Citizen, you're right, the name "Schizo Tech" refers to schizophrenia, while the trope examples seem to refer to multiple personality disorder (in that the technologies are from multiple eras. It's because the majority of the population wrongly believes that schizophrenia involves multiple personalities. Everyone forgets that multiple personalities are the main symptom of multiple personality disorder (now called dissociative identity disorder), while schizophrenia's primary symptoms are delusions, hallucinations, and disrupted emotional expression. In fact the name of this trope is just perpetuating this myth about schizophrenia and I'd like to see it changed to "Anachronistic Tech" or "Cobblestones and Laser Pistols", etc.

Foxyshadis: lol, someone added Guu twice.

Seven Seals: "Sheogorath, the god of madness, who wears a prominently displayed pocketwatch, despite the fact that clockwork has never been invented in Tamriel."

I haven't actually played Shivering Isles, but this is interesting. It sounds like a sly reference to the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, who also had a very inappropriate watch (with the player going "down the rabbit hole", in a sense).

  • Master Hand: I actually never noticed a pocketwatch on him in Shivering Isles. I guess he has one in Daggerfall, but the sprite's so small I never saw it there either. But a White Rabbit reference would be very appropriate, he always struck me as a cross between Lewis Caroll and Willy Wonka, in personality.

Adam Cuerden: I think Full Metal Alchemist is more Steampunk than Schizo Tech, unless Steampunk is a subset of Schizo Tech.

Art $avage: I added the picture. I think it's amusing here, but does anyone think it should it be moved to scavenger world article?

Citizen: (it was this picture). The image is too large and externally-hosted anyway. It might go better (resized) in Scavenger World.

Big T: Do you guys think the Flinstones fits better here, at Steampunk, or some other trope I just haven't heard of yet? Stone Tech? Punk Rock (get it?)?

Master Hand: Definitely here, as there's no steam. Alternatively, Punk Punk has a Stone Punk link, perhaps you could get some feedback on YKTTW and possibly give it some content.
