What's Happening

This is discussion archived from a time before the current discussion method was installed.

WVI: Is "Cloud Cuckoolander" really a common phrase and not just the name of a stage from Banjo-Tooie?

Sabre Justice: It's actually the name of a poem, which describes a bizarre land in the clouds.
Ununnilium: I don't think either of the Discworld examples count. Both of them *are* insane, as opposed to just weird.

Looney Toons: I'll second that. The addition struck me as off when I saw it last night.

Cort Jstr: I think The Tick should be pulled also. His orgin story is that he escaped from a mental institution. Later comics partially Ret Conned this with a story that the institution director considers all super-people "insane." But still, he's clearly not right.
Fast Eddie pulled ani, distracts from text.
CodeMan38: "People with Asperger's Syndrome, occasionally. If you have it, you know what I mean." ::breaks out laughing:: I resemble that remark! (Heck, I refer to myself as a Cloudcuckoolander in my profile...)

KickingK I was looking at the discussion to say exactly the same thing. Loony Lovegood, c'est moi. Or it was when I was younger. Most people seem to like Luna, so I don't mind. Those of us whose AS is mild enough just to produce Cloudcuckoolander behaviour are pretty lucky, though.

CodeMan38: I've used icons of Osaka-san from Azumanga Daioh on several forums... because she reminds me way too much of myself. Well, except for the whole gender thing... but other than that, yeaaah.

BenjaminGeiger: I removed the (poorly-written) "autsim" [sic] line from the main discussion. It'd be fair to re-enter something about AS, but I don't think low-functioning autistic people really qualify here. The same could be said about the schizophrenic or others with difficulty sensing the real world. (PS: I'm not so much Osaka as Pinky.)

Big T: I added the Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny! part. I know for surethat such a person is usually displayed as a Cloud Cuckoo Lander, but I don't know if it works the other way. Since I put a CCL wick on ADOS, I just thought I should do it the other way around as well.

Fast Eddie: Pulled off two opening quotes.
"Ahh! We're gonna die!...Wait, does it hurt to die?"
"Chickens are part of the natural cycle of life, and that's why we use them to play chickenball in the house!"
Master Shake, Aqua Teen Hunger Force

As being too many. Please see Administrative Policy
Looney Toons: Snipped the recent addition

  • Spongbob is as full of Clouudcuckoolanders as well insainity. However this is comedic.

because it's so badly written that I had no idea how to fix it to reflect what the contributor thought he was saying.

Shotgun Ninja: Just replace it with some variant of "SpongeBob SquarePants. The whole cast."
Scud East: I know about Cloud Cuckoo Land, but is the trope name partially a pun on "Zoolander"? And, if so, why isn't it mentioned? (Haven't seen the movie myself, or I would, assuming it fit.)
Unknown Troper: You know, we need a Just for Fun page where we can dump our own Cloudcuckoolander-style musings. I can't make it myself, though, 'cause I'm on a library computer and it'll time out before I figure out how it should look. That, and I'm not sure if it's really a good idea or if I just think it's a good idea 'cause I don't sleep much.

Anonymous: In regards to the Reno 911 thing about Weigel, Lt. Dangle isn't really gay, as he has an ex-wife whom he still holds complicated feelings for, and even had sex with weigel in the movie. Dangle is bisexual, probably leaning towards gay.
Srrgth: Would like to point out that "Like Spinning Plates" from Radiohead's album Amnesiac mentions cloud cuckoo land. And being killed horribly. Good song. [1]
This Troper would like to sugest that Cloud Coocoolander also redirects here. I can never spell this thing right.
Count Dorku: How do you do that little disappearing-into-asterisk thingy? I was going to use it on the Freudian Slip thing with Harpo, but couldn't track down any of the pages I've seen it on. Actually, never mind, just found it, it was the "hottip".
Sabbo: Pulled the Real Life example, due to it having no point of reference.
  • Probably a lot of people but Bella-hime once thought that time wasn't real or something.

LE Xicon 712: I prefered "Osaka is not like you" as the picture caption.

Xi Whoeverski: Seconded. It was short and sweet.

Inkblot: I know, but that picture is in danger of being replaced since Osaka is apparently too obscure and that it doesn't really show her being a Cloud Cuckoo Lander. I added a caption explaining why Osaka's an example as a temporary fix until we figure out what should be done. But yeah, the other caption was better. I'll put it back. You can vote for what should be the new picture here. Don't worry; Osaka seems to be the clear winner.

LE Xicon 712: If we change the Osaka picture, i feel like we should change the caption as well. Since it's voted the best, I'll change the picture only.

Here's the original

Osaka is not like you.

Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes, J.D. from Scrubs, The Doctor, Madame Foster from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Milly Thompson from Trigun, Tsukasa from Lucky Star, several countries from Axis Powers Hetalia, and Hohenheim from Fullmetal Alchemist all have been shown to be quite normal/smart, but a little loopy.

Thusly many of these characters are not quite Cloudcuckoolanders since they need to have both feet off the ground (Which is what The Wonka page specifies.), and the clever ones such as J.D., The Doctor, Hohenheim, and Madame Foster would be The Wonka. Belle from Beauty and the Beast is a subversion. From the description, the character Dolce from Geneshaft also sounds like The Wonka. Fran from Franken Fran is surely The Wonka since she acts quite reserved, but has a lack of understand about normal human emotion. She truly cares and isn't completely loopy.

Does anyone else think these examples should be moved/altered?

The quote at the top of this page "do not be afraid to joust a giant just because some people insist on believing in windmills" was never said by Don Quixote, it actually was said by Donkyhotay (spelling is correct).

Janitor: Okay. great. Who the hell is Donkyhotay?

Enero25: Sorry if I'm being stupid, but was there a Real Life section and it got removed for some reason? I'd think there would be plenty of pig-tailed Cloudcuckoolanders floating around here...the question would be where they got them... Muramasan13: It's located about 2/3s of the way down the "Other" folder. There's also a Troper Tales for it.
