Errick: I think I didn't launch the page correctly, for I do not see the discussion here. But eh.

Tanto: That Ultima example has acute TL;DR Syndrome. Someone who knows the series take a hacksaw to it, please.

Sci Vo: Pulled this, hacked and slashed it, and moved the bloody remains to Bag of Spilling:

  • Many of the later Ultimas were way overambitious and had to be seriously cut down between planning and publishing. Ultima VII was so ambitious that it was literally cut in half, creating Ultima VII: The Black Gate, and Ultima VII Part 2: Serpent Isle, which barring a six-month interlude in the middle that manifests only as cut scene text, is intended to be played one directly after the other. However, this decision was made early enough that each game is truly a full game, and by the end of Ultima VII the Avatar and party is powered up with all the various weapons and armor that the land of Brittania can provide. This causes a problem for the beginning of Serpent Isle, not to mention the continuity issue of how any given player's character was outfitted at the end of U7. The solution? Immediately after getting off the boat onto Serpent Isle, you are struck by magical transposing lightning that trades your Infinity +1 Sword for a piece of cheese, your Uber Armor for a bucket, etc., and even trades your party members for random scrap items. And thus do you begin your adventure suitably depowered. Oh, and welcome to level 1 for no reason. (Well, I'd be feeling pretty Level-1-ish after getting hit by magical lightning too.)

Just adding the idea that Assasins' Creed on the Play Station 3 (and X Box 360?) is a classic example of A Taste of Power. The character is a full rank assassin on a failed assassination and is demoted to the lowest rank. He then has to work his way back to the top through quests, etc.

Amie from Neverwinter Nights 2 ? She is just a pretty averange wizard, has nothing really special and rather poor stats (they may be in Character, but are still rather poor). While she uses magic missiles in the cutscene as an at least lvl 9 caster, i think this is a case of cutscene power ...
Errick: Just a reminder for future editors, this is not Bag of Spilling, or any other situation where you have your powers taken away in the middle of the game. This is only for games where you start with extra power and lose it very early on.
