On a side note, some protest that the The Departed, starring Irishmen, winning best picture while same screenplay starring Asians (Infernal Affairs) not even being nominated for best foreign picture is reflective of the bigoted attitudes of Hollywood.

Counterpoint- In 2002, when Infernal Affairs was released, China successfully submitted Hero for an Oscar Nomination for best Foreign Language film. In 2003, Japan successfully submitted Twilight Samurai for an Oscar nomination for best Foreign Language Film.

In 2004, when Infernal Affairs was released in the U.S., it missed the deadline to be submitted for any oscar consideration (due to academy rules against foreign films around two years old.) A contender for Foreign Language film needs not to be released in the U.S. for consideration. Infernal Affairs, actually, would have been eligible in 2003 (76th awards) because of the different eligibility deadline for foreign films and the rest of the awards. And, guess what, it was submitted: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_submissions_to_the_76th_Academy_Awards_for_Best_Foreign_Language_Film.

Ross N: Is this film really Black-and-Grey Morality? Costigan and Queenan are clearly far better people than Sullivan and Costello. Even Dignam's execution of Sullivan doesn't come across as that 'grey' in the circumstances.
