I got recommended in Twitter Somwehwere Boy by Pete Jackson and I was drawn in the mystery and the suspense the whole series brings in. Somewhere Boy seemed to be an interesting opportunity to mix a Drama and a Crime series. Like from the getgo there are many mysteries the show brings, What happened to Danny's mom? What was Danny's dad trying to protect Danny from? so this series was either going to develop a deep lore about a murder mystery or die trying (no pun intended). The results were mixed, though I did end up liking the whole package I can't help but feel a lot of this series feels rushed they wanted to put in 20 minutes as many storylines as possible. The principal storyline of Danny having to come with terms that Steve is a terrible person is developed well, I like how we get different flashbacks with music playing and as the episodes go on they may Steve look *Worse* it really shows Danny had a Rose-Tinted Narrative of Steve as a coping mechanism.
The problem however resides in the other characters that seem more like an afterthought we get glimpses of Sue being worried about where Steve has kept Danny but she is a rather minor character. Aaron's character hates Danny in one episode and in the other he cares about him (though the show tries to justify it by saying Aaron felt Danny was taking away his mother) it is very inconsistent at least until the last three episodes if Aaron is on Danny's side or not. Aaron has two subplots one of helping in the farm the killer of Danny's mom (now reformed) so he doesn't put a lawsuit against him and the other of having a restrained relationship with his new father Paul In Danny's side episode 7 shows him having a hookup with a boy named Ash, the episode develops pretty naturaly the relationship (and I think even better than Daisy and Aaron relationship) but they make Ash (Aaron's crush) leave as a sort of way to have his Earn Your Happy Ending but it feels pretty rushed also. It is such a shame because if the show only had the parts focusing on Danny Steve and his mother relationship it would be a better show than it is, but at this state it feels like there is a lot of unwasted potential.
A potential season 2 would have the problem that while the main arc with Danny dealing with his father's loss is dealt well it feels like there is not much more to say about that arc, they could focus on Danny having to learn what he missed in an Adult School maybe have Danny try one of the dating apps and sort of criticise the paranormal relationships but the Mysetry part would be pretty much dead and the show would not be that different of something like Atypical. Still, in spite of all these flaws I would still recommend this the show is messy but it is beautifully shot has a great soundtrack and the actors do a good job with what they are given, the writers just need to learn to be as concise as possible with the runtime they have 7/10.
