Witch Craft Works Anime Review: solid fantasy comedy

First off, the animation on this show is better than it has any right to be. Notably, it uses 3D animation in interesting ways, and usually to great effect. If nothing else, this show is worth watching for the animation alone.

The characters are an odd bunch, both literally and from a meta perspective. Almost all of the side characters are quirky and funny, and are used exclusively for comedy, so much that the parts of the show focusing on them border on Gag Series at times (Kaiju teddy bear fight!). Compared to them, the two leads and the (dramatic) parts of the plot focusing on their relationship feel almost out of place. This is not to say the plot is not interesting. It is not as straightforward as it might seem at first glance, and there is a fair amount of grey morality and Enemy Mine involved. The show also uses flashbacks liberally and to great effect, both dramatic and comedic, and it allows for some clever plot twists. I do feel that the main character is a little bit too much of an Ordinary High-School Student (even quoting the trope verbatim) and lacks the personality that makes the other characters in the show so entertaining, although he does take a level in badass later on.

A lot of the humour also comes from the copious amounts of Funny Background Events going on. Suffice to say that while the show has some issues, I was never bored watching it.
