So when hunting (pun intended) for werewolves movies because I'm a fan, and I watch them ALL, I found this. Like most of these movies, it didn't have good reviews and people criticized it, saying it was too similar to Fright Night. Well, Fright Night is a classic and you can count the amount of acclaimed werewolves movies with one hand, so this had me curious.
They weren't kidding. It's one of the most blatant rip-offs I've seen. I'd like to call it a homage, but is pretty much a scene by scene reconstruction of Fright Night with the exception of, quite literally, two or three scenes. This is even more blatant because that movie was remade three times already (with the sequel, the 2011 remake, and the Romania remake-sequel).
It's not necessary for me to talk about the plot, since you should know it, but I'm gonna do it anyway. We have now a female protagonist, Loren, that starts spying on his badass, motorcycle riding werewolf neighbour. Bad stuff happens, people dies, and eventually she asks for the help of Redd Tucker, a fake hunter that had used to have a tv show. Add a smartass little brother, and a dumb dude who's in love with her to the mix and you have yourself a plot.
So what the fuck? What does "Never Cry Werewolf" brings to the table? Not a whole lot, I must say. The comedy is gold and every time the character of Redd Tucker was on screen, I couldn't stop laughing. There's also simply not enough werewolves movies, and this one is one of the good "bad ones". It also has this B movie feel all over it, reinforced by the low budget and cartoony characters. Some might not like this, but personally I enjoyed it. The whole movie has this... charm, to it. Is easily likeable.
Is that it? Should you even bother? I mean, I'm trying to tell you how much I liked this movie and every praise I make comes out as something silly. Because, let me repeat it: this IS a rip off of a movie we've seen four times already. I know that. But even then, I will say it again: I greatly enjoyed this movie. Is campy, low budget and has a B feel to it, but is simply enjoyable. I guess there's a reason this same plot has been used so many times. Is that safe dish you can go back to whenever you want a guaranteed good time.
Film A lot better than you think
