FanficRecs When She Smiles fanfic review
Not a feel-good fanfic, but despite being rough in places this one is worth a read, staying true to what I think to be the quietly broken, yet hopeful spirit of Evangelion. More importantly, I believe the author shows an excellent understanding of Asuka and Shinji's characters and their relationship. YMMV on whether it was better as a one-shot, the later scenes being more reminiscent of One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest than NGE, but don't let my words dissuade you. This is another one that, as always, you ought to read for yourself sometime.

This story is awesome. While it's true that the first chapter works perfectly well on its own, I feel like the continuation was a welcome addition. The sad, raw, crushing windup to the conclusion captured what I like most about Shinji's and Asuka's relationship: maddening pain and difficulty and the struggle to overcome it for a thin ray of hope. The vaguely stream-of-consciousness narration gives great perspective into the characters. It's perfectly Evangelion. There are some flaws, I'd say, or perhaps just areas that could have been fleshed out more (I would have liked more definition between Asuka and Misato, for instance), but it's still impressive overall.

Very good and powerful read. (Spoiler) Set in a world returning to normal after the Third Impact, it deals with how the cast was affected. Primarily deals with Shinji and Asuka, but also Misato and her relationships with them, and how all three have hurt each other.
Everyone is in character perfectly.
