Normally I hate stories that focus on Roy and Riza growing up together, but this is quite possibly the best thing I have ever read. I can't recommend it enough. The only thing I have to say, though, is make sure you haven't got anything important going on before starting to read. It's a longfic, at eighty chapters long, and if you enjoy it as much as I did you will find yourself incapable of doing anything else until it's finished.

While it's extremely disappointing that Shall Never See So Much was put on permanent hiatus, We That Are Young and the published chapters of its sequel are easily some of the best stories you will ever read. The author does a wonderful job of balancing both viewpoints of Roy and Riza, and even at times adding other points of view from more minor characters. And there are many Call Forwards that foreshadow events in the manga, even adding in existing characters subtly, from Edward and Winry to Marcoh and Dr. Knox. Like the commenter above, absolutely a must-read story.

This fic is a masterful imagining of the lives of young Roy and Riza as they stumble unwittingly into adulthood at a much to young age. The author has an uncanny knack for and plays an intricate game of psychological cause and effect that ends up seamlessly fitting into the fabric of canon. Truly, a must-read.

The first fic We That Are Young details the the childhood of a very young Riza Hawkeye and the young beggar boy she adopts into the family by the name Roy Mustang. However the new addition brings many changes, including Roy's growing friendship with Maes Hughes, discovery of alchemy and Riza's father's eventual descent into madness, abuse and seclusion. The sequel follows Maes' ,Roy's and eventually Riza's joining the military and focuses on Roy's struggle to crack his sensei's alchemical code and take the sate alchemist exam. It is currently on Permanent hiatus.

Excellent. The best fic about early Roy and Riza out there. Fits seamlessly together and weaves in familiar characters when you'd least expect it. Touching and heartbreaking in turn. A must-read, though I'll echo the above: it will consume your life until you've finished it.
