The first season of Project 863, “Discovering 863” was a mixed bag for me, but at the end of the day I enjoyed it enough to recommend a watch. The basic plot is three employees of Hi-5 Studios gradually uncover the history of Syntec and the Corporate Conspiracy behind it. They grapple with who to trust as former employees of Syntec and a suspicious undercover officer complicate their attempts to piece together the plot.
While the plot is fascinating, the Wham Episodes tended to come clumped together, leaving the episodes in-between them feeling sluggish, especially the sub-reddit reviews, as they can be quite lengthy. The main cast aren’t terrible actors, but are obvious amateurs, and in high emotion scenes they can come off as narmy. The special effects and props are surprisingly high quality, especially a scene in the finale I won’t mention for being a big spoiler. Finally, the original soundtrack always fits the scene well, though whether it is worth buying the vinyl is debatable.
While I admit the show is certainly in the middle where quality is concerned, I think the plot carries it well enough to wait and see if Season Two will Grow the Beard in the less favourable aspects of the series.
