A nice little animation, if in need of a bit of polish.

I'm just going to get the obvious comparison to Double Rainboom out of the way here: I like Snowdrop better. The makers actually went to the trouble of having a coherent plot and a rounded main character, the animation is mostly spot-on, and unlike DR it isn't padded with eight minutes of filler. Now that that's out of the way:

The Good:

  • The animation is great.

  • The writing (with a few exceptions I'll note below) is generally good.

  • The plot works well with the visuals and and revolves around a sympathetic character.

  • Snowdrop herself is actually a relatively interesting character. The writers didn't lean too hard on making her a heartstring-tugging character when it would have been really easy to. For the most part she was handled with more subtlety than that.

The bad(ish):

  • Snowdrop's speech to Celestia and Luna is rather awkward and comes across as cheesy, especially because it's far longer than it needs to be. It's touching at points, but some of the effect is lost in the fact that she just keeps going and going.

  • The end of the episode when it flashes forward to the present day fell a bit flat to me rather than being as emotionally hitting as the crew intended. There are two reasons for this: The first is that it feels a bit tacked on; the animation could easily have ended before this scene played and it would have been the perfect resolution. It could have worked if they developed the relationship with Celestia and Luna a bit more, which brings us to the second reason: Luna's assertion that Snowdrop meant so much to her is a bit iffy because we never actually see that bond being formed. Luna and Snowdrop interact for all of 30 seconds in the animation, so having Luna suddenly act like Snowdrop was the only one who understood her seems like a blatant attempt to turn the ending into a tear jerker. Unfortunately, for me at least it didn't work because I couldn't be invested in their friendship because it never appears. (The final shot with the snowflake was a great thematic decision, even if it doesn't make a lot of sense from a storyline perspective; we've seen the pegasi make snowflakes, so they didn't need to use that one.)

Overall, it's very good animation that could have been great with the addition of a scene or two and a bit of trimming on the dialogue. I definitely recommend it.
