Surprisingly Good

The first lp of his I watched was Conker's Bad Fur Day, and I was immediately put off by the toilet humor so prevalent in his style. However, I really quite enjoyed his commentary, despite how often he got lost in the game. I honestly didn't expect to like it as much as I did. I came back to him about a year later and really started watching other lp's: Skyward Sword, DK 64, Majora's Mask, Super Mario Sunshine. And I really started to get it.

He isn't that good at video games. Well, let me rephrase that. He isn't that good at 3D video games as his depth perception can be quite off. He is quite good at 2D games. But that's part of what makes him so much fun to watch. He constantly makes mistakes and overlooks the obvious, making it feel like I'm watching a genuine person play the game. There was a comment on one of the videos that said that he was really dumb, yet really lucky, and I think that sums it up quite well.

NCS's style is also a bit off putting. He has some of the same style that was so prevalent in Conker's, but significantly toned down in other lps since that was part of the focus of that game. I've come to find I don't mind it so much and even can play along sometimes. He burps and farts and talks about picking his nose and other such nasty things during the lp, which is really rather odd for an lper on youtube.

But what really makes me keep coming back is that he feels like he's carrying on a conversation with the person watching. He talks about his life. He talks about his working on his videos. I get the impression that he's rather introverted in real life, and thus I can relate to him more. It's quite different from other lpers out there, and I think that's why he's become so famous. I watched a few videos of the runaway guys and I can never pick him out amongst the other two who are clearly rather extroverted, I don't know who they are. But that's ok.

His style isn't for everyone, but I know I can enjoy it. You might be off put by his toilet humor or his burping/farting while he's playing, but if you can get past that, NCS is an lper worth watching, if nothing else just for how different his style is. Also, you often get a real sense of "I know that feel bro," from him, which we can all benefit from.
