Time for a positive review

First off, I should mention that I'm not exactly a die-hard TMNT fan like some other people here might be. But I'm a child of the 80's so it was kind if impossible not to be exposed to the Turtles growing up. That said, I think it's important to realize that this update of the show, while made by people who are long-time TMNT fans, is primarily aimed at a newer, younger generation of fans who don't have the same expectations and preconceptions that older fans do. Once you understand that, it'll be easier to embrace the MST 3 K Mantra and just go with it.

Personally, I'm really enjoying this show so far. I like the different visual style, it doesn't take itself too seriously, and yet there's still hints of darkness here and there. I love that the Turtles all have their own looks, and I even like the idea of April being the same age as them (though she needs more Character Development, and hasn't really gotten a chance to go break out of the Damsel In Distress role yet). I'm a bit worried that they'll slip into a Monster Of The Week formula right now, but it's only been three episodes so it's too soon to tell. Either way, I'll keep tuning in.

So would I recommend this show? Definitely yes. I just watched it with my younger brother who was a bigger Turtle fan than me when we were kids, and he loved it. So I'm pretty confident other people will like it, too, if they just give it a chance.

Oh, and one last thing; it could have been worse.

If this IS in response to the two prior reviews, you should really reread them, as both have focused on what the episode did on its own, with minor (at best) comparisons to previous Turtles shows.

Aiming at a new audience is fine, but plots don't need to have lazy writing and idiot balls abound because said younger audience won't be expected to question it.

Really? You want people to give the new show a chance because it's aimed at a newer audience with different expectations, then link to Michael Bay, whose currently involved with a tmnt movie being bombed with criticisms of how its being aimed at a newer audience with different expectations?

It could have been worse

It could have been better.

@haikomori

If you can elaborate, that'd be great.

@ Mr Mouse My review wasn't meant to be a response to the previous two. I just wanted to to write a good review about this show because no one else has and because I like it. I won't try to compare it to previous versions as I barely remember the '87 cartoon and did not see enough of the 2003 cartoon to make any kind of judgement about it. I didn't mean to use the "newer audience with different expectations" comment as an excuse for "lazy writing" or "idiot balls". Also, I feel the show's strengths outweigh its weaknesses, and after reading your previous review it's clear we don't agree on those points.

I already linked to Michael Bay, and I know what he wants to do with the Turtles. That's what I meant when I said "It could have been worse." If nothing else, the 2012 cartoon has the decency to remain (relatively) faithful to its source material in that, while it may appear radically different at first glance, is still the same at its core. It's one thing to reboot a popular franchise and put a different spin on it, it's quite another to totally warp it into something that bears only a superficial resemblance to its source material. But that's another conversation for another time.

You might not have been trying to seem like a jerk, but right now I feel attacked. I don't mind if you disagree with my opinions, but please don't tell me I'm wrong for having them.

Wait...so you know nothing about the previous two shows and yet feel it stays faithful to them? What?

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

@Wackd: She says it stays faithful to the source, which presumably means the original comic.

"What's out there? What's waiting for me?"

@Wackd: I never said that I know nothing about them. I said that I did watch both of the previous shows, but I saw the first when I was really young and the second I didn't watch it consistently. I also saw the first two movies, and used to read the Archie comics sometimes. The original Mirage comic is the one I know the least about. Crap, why can't I go back and edit that comment now?

But here's the thing—that's really not much of a background for you to be claiming to know enough about the past stuff to know that this "stays true to it", unless you're comparing this to the first two movies or Archie comics.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

@Wackd: The main point I wanted to make with my review was that I like this cartoon and I think other people will, too. I didn't set out to make comparisons to past TMNT media, that just came up in the comments. You're right, I don't have enough of a background to do that, (the most recent non-Nick TMNT cartoon I've watched being Turtles Forever, which I really enjoyed), and comparing this cartoon to the as-yet-unreleased Michael Bay movie may have been a bit presumptuous of me. So I'm just going to restate my main point so there's no more confusion; I like this cartoon, and I think other people will, too.

You mean like the '87 cartoon did? Oooh Burn! *get's beaten up by '87 cartoon fans*
