This trilogy was started in 1995, and is now a Dead Fic. The main story is complete, but the author decided to rewrite the SMZ portion, and lost momentum with about 6 chapters to go. In her notes and in forum comments, she's said that the last few chapters were meant to play out almost identically to the original 'draft' of the plot.
This was among the most popular tales in the BSSM community, as the vast fanart collection and multitude of Fan-sequels attest to — there are over 20 different fan-sequels to the Trilogy proper! Also notable is the author's grasp of the Japanese language, and her knowledge of Japanese culture. (After writing most of the fic, she moved to Japan and worked as a translator.)
