Bad characters, bad plot, amazing battles

I will admit this first: The Law of Ueki is not well-written. Characters do things that are entirely contradictory because of the mechanics of Shonen, characters gain powers out of thin air, half the rules of the world contradict themselves, and the voices are rather grating. HOWEVER! The series does have some of the most amazing battle scenes I have ever seen. Truly this is a series that runs on Rule Of Cool. So turn your brain off and appreciate this series for the excellent string of boss fights (รก la Tony Jaa) it is.

Nice review...I agree, but I have to ask something: Which law contradicts itself again?

Take it easy. Relax. Prepare to die.

EDIT: Mainly Sano's condition to hold his breath when he uses his power.

While I think many of the powers are very interesting visually (and it's fun to see people get creative with them), I'll agree that the plot isn't very strong and the characters can be annoying. Also, Ueki is seriously overpowered; when I first heard about the series, "the power to turn garbage into trees" sounded almost completely useless, nothing at all like the infinite combo thing he actually does. And then he gets a power that basically cancels other powers. I don't know, it's a weak plot but it has a lot of interesting ideas. I like it, but I know that it isn't very good.

Actually when I first heard about "the power to turn garbage into trees", I thought it was overpowered then I saw Ueki's other abilities. It's way too preachy and it constantly contradict itself(established rules, logic, themes). All the characters are unlikable shonen stereotypes. The plot is dumb and "God" is an asshole who started the stupid tournament instead of establishing a democratic system. However the battles are awesome.

What is with shonen anime and bad characters, anyway?

I understand what you mean about a weak plot but I personally liked a few characters (-cough- Sano) and I noticed how the ability to hold his breathe cancelled out after the first level. I think the author forgot about this amongst other things. I think if he put more character development into the series, it would have been better. But the anime is drawn WAY better than the manga. -_-

That's really all I can say since I'm just standing up for Sano only. Also, I liked the music that went with the battles. XD

Say it in red! "People die when they are killed."

It wasn't suppose to be well written, I think it was actually intended to be a gag manga or a parody. To say the least it was the mangaka's first series. Yeah and Sano's power made no sense, maybe if they wrote in the ability for people to overcome their limits it'd make sense, cus that's essentially what he did.
