When I was younger, my experience with Channel Awesome was mostly centered around watching Critic, Chick, and Todd, with rare branches out to other creators (like Blockbuster Buster). It wasn't until a year or two ago that I really began to check out Phelan's work... but "MAH GOD" do I really enjoy it!
Not only is he super funny and good at creating entertaining videos, his videos are also highly informative. Beyond just snarking at stupid things in a movie, he'll take the time to research what it is he's about to review, digging into even the smallest details to share with his audience. Whether it's discussing a cartoon from his childhood, a dumb horror movie, or a poorly made bootleg toy, he goes out of his way to not only make jokes, but also to be informative about the history of whatever it is he's looking at. I walk away from his videos not only having been entertained, but having learned something.
If there's a single complaint I can make, it's that some of his jokes can get a bit repetitive, especially when it comes to reusing Wabuu or Old Man in his cartoon reviews. But, that small bit of annoyance at times isn't enough to make me not rewatch his videos on the reg, and nor does it hamper my overall enjoyment of his work.
Phelan is a great creator who deserves a lot more love and views than he gets. He's funny, intelligent, and hard-working, and each video just gets better and better.
