Read It

Negatives about the Way of Kings:

Size. It's a thousand and one pages in hardcover, not including four pages of appendix.

Positives about the Way of Kings:

Everything else.

The characters are beautiful, and become more detailed as the story progresses. The world itself is completely alien, but described in such a way that these things don't become obvious until chapters later—Sanderson never lapses into Expo Speak, and loves the use of Cryptic Background References. This does not feel like a book. This feels like a window into another world, perhaps a journal literally written by the viewpoint characters. The action is sparse, which has been pointed out by critics as a bad thing, but I think it is like a spice: Sprinkled throughout, where it will be most effective.

Shallan's story is a slog at the beginning, but these are necessary for establishing her character and background, which is far removed from everyone elses'. Her chapters eventually become some of the most captivating, and the next book (which Sanderson plans to focus on her) looks promising.

Go read it. Right now. Why are you still here? Shoo.

I agree with this. The action scenes it did have were actually pretty awesome. There was actually a lot of them it just felt like there was few because of its huge length and the fact that they were spread out. I didn't mind the length. The characters were pretty cool. I specially liked Kaladin who i initially thought was going to be a Mat(from the wheel of time) rip off what with the luck, the spear, the brilliant commander thing. I was surprised to see he was nothing like Mat but the character with the most interesting POV.

I wholeheartedly agree with this review. I'm ludicrously excited for book 2. And 3. And 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, for that matter. It's a good thing Brandon Sanderson is an inhuman writing robot from the future that apparently doesn't need to eat or sleep.

For a book this good, that's a positive, not a negative.

I almost completely agree. However, I believe that the problem with the series isn't that this book is so long (it gives us the chance to find many more clues to the nature of the world and characters), but that the second book is taking so long. But it's coming near my birthday, so I am happy.

"Oh great! Let's pile up all the useless cats and hope a tree falls on them!"
