Kamisama no Memochou: Decent Anime That Could've Been Much More

Having finished watching Kamisama no Memochou(God's Notepad) some time ago, I felt like making a review in order to share my opinion on this anime. Kamisama no Memochou is a Mystery anime from 2011 that tells the story of main character Narumi and his adventures with the brilliant but antisocial computer detective Alice and her team of NEE Ts. The cases Narumi, Alice and the team take on range from simple and lighthearted to very dark and grim. Having watched all 12 episodes of the show, I can honestly say that I felt like it was decent but it could've been much more than it was. I generally liked it but it didn't blow me away. Here's what I liked and disliked about the show.

I think that the art is generally pretty good. It looks really good for a show from 2011. The lighting and backgrounds look well done and the characters look pretty distinct. There's no same face to be found here. Overall, while it's not on the level of Picasso, I generally think the art is pretty good.

The cases are, for the most part, interesting. While I liked some more than others, I was pretty entertained by what I saw and I found it interesting how certain cases were solved. What I really like about the cases are that they aren't just dark. They can be pretty lighthearted as well(see episodes 4 and 9 for this). At times, I was laughing my ass off at certain scenes. All in all, the cases were generally pretty good.

The main characters were decent as well. Narumi does a pretty good job as the main lead. I liked watching him change as the anime went on and he had some pretty cool moments that I liked. I also like his interactions with the other characters. Alice was a pretty interesting character. Not many anime have a NEET loli who's also a genius detective. I really liked her interactions with Narumi and how close they got as the anime went on. She also had some pretty cool moments(especially one in the last episode, but I won't spoil it). In my opinion, both leads were likable and decent.

While I think Kamisama no Memochou was overall decent, I feel that it had some flaws that prevented it from becoming more than decent. For one, the secondary characters, while quirky and entertaining, weren't all that deep in my opinion. With the exception of a few, I felt like I didn't know them enough to get emotionally invested in them. I honestly wish that they had gotten more development so I could've connected to them more. Another flaw with the anime is that it ends pretty anticlimactically in my opinion. It feels like it could've shown more but it ends somewhat abruptly. This is my feeling at least.

While Kamisama no Memochou could've been better, I still think it was a decent enough series. If you're into Mystery/Detective Drama then you should check this anime out. You might like it.
