Interesting idea...less than stellar execution

I like the idea of the Death Battle combatants living together in one big area. I really do. But here's my issue with it: This story is WAY too meta. The characters are all well aware of their status as fictional characters, which honestly, I feel REALLY takes out of the experience. Deadpool, it makes sense, but everyone else? It just seems off. On top of that, certain characters hog the spotlight [Yang, Tifa, Cloud, Guts, etc.] while others appear in one chapter if they're lucky [Bucky, Bomberman, Dan, Ivy]. The whole 'Yang is depressed' arc has REALLY overstayed its welcome. We get it, you feel she's unfairly hated after the battle, just please stop cramming it down our throats. And that brings me to another point: The author basically uses every single character as a mouthpiece to state his opinions. He's done this to rant about how awful Death Battle's detractors are, even once flat-out having Mario state that he wants to physically hurt them. He's done this to call out fanmade Death Battles he feels were biased against Yang without consulting the writers to see if they were comfortable with their work being mentioned, let alone criticized for their results [Which in turn is highly hypocritical of him, considering how much he hates it when others accuse ScrewAttack of bias]. And most recently, he's done this to rant about ships he doesn't like and the people who do ship them. No matter what his intentions are, it just comes off as mean-spirited. Sure, he TRIES to keep them in character, but when practically every chapter has somebody make some kind of snarky remark about people being angry over the result of a battle or characters who would normally NEVER be known for breaking the fourth wall making some meta reference to their games or manga or whatever, I just can't help but roll my eyes. Deadpool is literally the only character there that should be making comments and references like that. Seeing Guts, Cloud or Tracer do it just feels incredibly off-putting. All in all, this guy had a good idea, but he squandered it with fourth wall jokes told by character who should not be self aware of their fictional status, characters that are even worse mouthpieces than Brian Griffin, arcs that drag on WAY too long [Just get Yang OVER her depression already!], and an unpleasant hostility against the more vocal and aggressive crowd of Death Battle haters [I get that they can take it a bit far, but still...]. I tried to get into this fic, but really, I just can't do it.

(This is Dudeblade X on account that the current account is unable to post.)

Meta thing was addressed in chapter 73, I regret chapter 72, and I am sorry that I dissapointed you. I\'ll be doing my best to get those other characters in more chapters. And for the record, even /I/ got tired of the \'yangst\' arc after a while. I gave it one last go, and then I left it alone.

I could do a re-write if it makes you feel better.

I couldn\'t ask you to rewrite the whole thing. It\'s your story at the end of the day, you don\'t need to change anything to suit my preferred tastes.

It\'s alright. But I do acknowledge the fact that I\'ve given a few characters the spotlight a bit much. I\'m trying to include everyone. I\'ve accepted a long time ago that I can\'t really please everyone. So, at the moment, I\'m trying to figure out an arc that involves some of the characters you mentioned didn\'t get enough screentime. Except Ivy. I just have no idea how to write a dominatrix.

Well, you could always write Ivy as someone who is haughty, arrogant, prideful and doesn\'t take crap from anyone. That\'s how I remember her. Other characters I don\'t recall being used very much, or in very major roles, are:

Boba Fett, Samus Aran, Akuma, Shang Tsung, Haggar, Zangief, the ninja turtles, Zitz, Yoshi, Riptor, Felicia, Taokaka, Kratos, Spawn, Dig Dug, Vegeta, Luke Skywalker, Harry Potter, Mai Shiranui, Starscream, Rainbow Dash, Master Chief, Doomguy, Eggman, Wily, Thor, Raiden [Both], Pikachu, Blanka, He-Man, Lion-O, Shao Kahn, M. Bison, Strider Hiryu, Ryu Hayabusa, Orchid, Fox,Tails,Venusaur, Blastoise, Godzilla, Gamera, Captain America, Tommy, Zechs, Kirby, Majin Buu [Would he be a hero or villain?], Sol Badguy, Gaara, Toph, Nightmare, Goliath, Sam Fisher, Doctor Doom, Darth Vader, Donkey Kong, Knuckles, Wolverine, Hercule Satan, Mega Man, Astro Boy, Tai and Agumon, Mewtwo, Scout and Terry. Not too sure if you had any plans to incorporate Amy and Ramona into a lot of chapters, but maybe now that this has been brought to your attention, you will.

And another suggestion: You\'ve made a point to call out the blind death battle haters. But couldn\'t you also take some time to call out the opposite end of the spectrum? Y\'know, the people who will just mindlessly nod their heads and go along with everything Death Battle has to say, no matter how ludicrous it is [Freakin\' super lava/holy weapons/death curse nonsense...], while also laughing off/looking down at/getting defensive over every argument made against their points, no matter how well thought out and reasonable their opinions on the matter are, because they are of the mindset that everyone who doesn\'t follow along with Death Battle\'s reasonings is just a salty fanboy who is not to be taken seriously. It goes both ways, really. The people who agree with certain battles have to deal with bitter, angry fanboys foaming at the mouth with rage. The people who don\'t agree with it have to deal with the blind defenders who won\'t accept anything else.
