A Great Juxtaposition

Transplanting the upper-class characters and rich settings of Downton Abbey into the futuristic dystopia of The Hunger Games might not seem like a concept that would work, but Rap541 does it brilliantly. The extrapolations of the canon characters and situations make an odd, but compelling kind of sense. This story deepens the world of The Hunger Games by adding layers of complexity and exploring some of the vast space left open by the canon novels.

The pacing is great, the macabre humor is stinging—it's a surprisingly amusing combination of dry British wit plus the horror of the Games—and the political and personal implications of life as a former Victor are both harrowing and gripping, because there is a blunt realism in all the fascinating extrapolations. There are nice brief touches of interactions with background characters from The Hunger Games, and just enough romance to humanize all the characters, but never enough for the story to turn into a dark soap opera.

Highly recommended!
