I really appreciated the Winchester family dynamic in this, it felt very true to the series. I sympathized with John and his motivations, while at the same time understanding how he often comes to make horrible parenting decisions. It's always more enjoyable and believable when John isn't written as a monster. The boys of course deal with some awful trauma here, and I think it's handled remarkably well. Sam's visions and the demon are brought in a little too early to be strictly canon, but you can make it work, and it certainly gave Sam a really interesting motivation for running away. I appreciated how this fic expanded on some of the glimpses of the boy's lives we see in 5x16 Dark Side of the Moon. And lastly, protective big brother Dean is in full force here, which is always my favorite.
The writing quality isn't the best I've ever seen, but by no means hinders the story. Overall rating, 8.5/10
