What were you hoping for the fic to have done, anyway? Please elaborate.
And a "pseudo-realistic setting"? We ARE talking about RWBY, right? The world where people use soul magic to fight monsters? :?

Personally, I don't see the escalation as abrupt or unexpected. Ryuugi does a much better job than Rooster Teeth of showing the Creatures of Grimm to be the existential threat that canon keeps insisting they are but doesn't really show. At that level, the street-level stuff canon gets by on just won't cut it.

God Mode
While it started out as a really good fic, the author's alternate source material seems to have ruined a bit of what the fic could have done. In turn, it has escalated from a pseudo-realistic setting, into a HOLY SHIT! WTF! I DON'T EVEN...
That isn't to say that it isn't good. It still is popular, if only on the fact that Jaune has pretty much reached the epitome of God Mode.
