He's back!

I love the Terminator films. Well, most of them. The original being a deconstruction of the slasher genre, and the second being a perfect sequel. T3 I kinda liked, and I never sat through all of Salvation.

This is a nice shot of adrenaline for the franchise. The humor is not forced and it actually has a nice commentary about our modern technology. In the original films, the concern was a single supercomputer on a server somewhere, and now we have computers in our pockets. You're certainly in arm's reach of one, probably two, computers or smart phones right now.

I do have a gripe that the trailers spoiled the twists, but I didn't pay too much attention, so they didn't bother me too much. I certainly look forward to and am very hopeful for sequels.

Don't be. It won't be getting them. This is how much it has earned so far. It might look all right, until you remember that its actual budget is between 150-170 million, and so it needs to earn at least 300 million by the end of its run to break even.

Essentially, it will fail unless it earns six times what it has earned right now by the end of the month, and that's not going to happen with all the competition. Even Metacritic decided to break their own rules and join in on the fun.

...Well, it's an action picture. Counting the world-wide gross, it might still make it.

Pacific Rim did worse in America, and it still made its money back. And opening weekend isn't even over yet!

It might, or it might not: after all overseas failed to save Tomorrowland or Jupiter Ascending. It's also competing directly against Jurassic World, and is playing alongside already hugely successful Inside Out and Magic Mike XXL, whose domestic box office is practically identical. We'll know by the end of the month, I guess.

Well, it has surpassed the 300 million mark now thanks to the foreign gross. And it hasn't even debuted in China yet, which will be on August 23. The Chinese viewing audience is a huge sucker for sci-fi films, and this will contribute massively to its profits.

I'm surprised to see that the biggest foreign gross for now is from South Korea. I guess they turned out to see Lee Byung-hyun even though he's supposed to be something of a pariah over there.

I see you're read that Den of Geek analysis as well. Nevertheless, do wait for your chickens to roost: Chinese audiences weren't anywhere near interested enough in sci-fi a couple months ago, when Tomorrowland debuted over there and earned practically nothing, cementing its status as second-largest flop this year (just behind Jupiter Ascending, and not by much.)

Similarly, Insurgent earned only 30 extra million or so over there. And besides, only a quarter or so of film's earnings in China actually go back to the studio, unlike the other markets. So, the future for sequels is not set. It did break even, and can no longer be considered a flop, but it now needs 375 m or thereabouts to be considered truly profitable. Incidentally, it's also the amount of money it needs to earn to beat Salvation's take. Will be fun to see if it gets there.
