A clever anime parading as a dumb one

It really pained me to start liking Punchline, as the premise itself makes it hard to reccomend to anyone else. A pervert is turned into a ghost and can't look at panties or the world will end? By episode 2 I was ready to write punch line down as another fighting action anime with fan-service and comedy elements.

But I soldiered on, on the recommendation of a friend.

Punchline's writer is the genius behind 999, and while punchline is nowhere as brillant as 999 was it is surprisingly clever. The twist halfway through the series makes the second half very entertaining. Despite the sadder moments the story keeps an upbeat cheerful tone that keeps things going forward.

The story is a bit too short for any really meaty intrigue to develop, and the villains are certainly not much more than a generic cookie cutter apocalypse cult. There are a few things from the Japanese script that don't make it to the English version, but overall the writing is very entertaining.

In the end, a viewer with some tolerance for fanservice will find a fun little series.

RE: the story's brevity

The anime was originally adapted from a script written for a game. Famitsu recently unveiled the first real news on the game, and when talking about it, Uchikoshi said that if everything from the game was in the anime, it'd have enough content for 22 episodes.

I'm not gonna say that makes the anime better or excuses that flaw, because I don't think it does, but I thought it was worth noting either way.

That's very interesting. I wasn't aware of this fact. It does explain to me why the story feels a bit contracted.
