Mary Sue Power, Make Up!

OK, I'm trying to watch this with a straight face, I really am. But watching episode 22 just made me feel suddenly "Why am I watching THIS again?"

I do acknowledge this is basically a faithful adaptation of the source material, but let's face it: the source material is not perfect. In fact, it is quite badly written.

Let's start with my most disliked aspect of the show: Sailor Moon is a Mary Sue. Every other senshi is basically useless, they serve no purpose on the show other than to get hurt and wait for Sailor Moon to save their asses. Sailor Moon is able to get a whole new wand by TOUCHING her boyfriend's hands and kill every enemy with one blast, while her fellow "warriors" can barely scratch them, even with their new attacks (Actually, their new attacks on the Black Moon Arc never accomplished anything).

Secondly: The massive inconsistencies and plot-holes. So, Sailor Moon stabs herself with the most powerful sword in the universe that can break through the hardest of the stones ever found by the human man... And she's saved by a clock. Yes, she had rammed half of a sword through her stomach and she fell uncounscious. But a CLOCK saved her. Oh, let's not forget: Chibi-Usa always knew Usagi was her mom, that's why she held her at gunpoint, tried to steal her Silver Crystal and did other nasty things to her. And the 900 years thing? Who the hell are they trying to fool?

Thirdly: Bad characters. Usagi doesn't care about anyone or anything, the only thing she ever cared about was Mamoru. Screw her friends, screw her family, screw the fate of the world. If anything happens to Mamoru, she's gonna kill herself. Her jealousy towards Chibi-Usa is no better, she's completely paranoid that she's gonna grow up and steal her boyfriend. Like, she's YOUR DAUGHTER... Yeah, it kinda happens later, but still... And Chibi-Usa herself? In this series, she's so EMO, she can't bare to see Pluto smiling to someone else other than her and will try to kill herself immediately. And of course, there are characters that are presented on one scene, like they're important or something (Momo/Diana) and simply vanish the next one.

Finally: Boring and predictable battles. I'm not gonna lie, I felt the MOTW battles were better than the ones against the big bads. Queen Beryl's death was a joke, so was Esmeraude's & Rubeus'.

Lol, I'm glad you finally saw it as well, I started watching the show and was interested with the show but omg Sailor Moon is such a typical mary sue! And the other characters have personalities, which you barley see looked into. I get her name is in the title but I wish they'd examine the other cast members.

While I agreed there are plenty of flaws in sailor moon 2 of the three you mention is contradicting and misleading.

First the Sailor Moon being a Mary Sue because she has a one hit kill attack that makes the rest of the scout useless is not true. She could one-shot a villain, but she can’t. Her attack takes time to prepare, all those fancy moves are there for a reason, and the villain has to be weaken sometimes. That why the scout are there to protect her and soften up the villain, if sailormmon tried to fight on her own she would get beaten like in episode 7 when Zoisite overpower her. She beat the Specter Sisters easily, because they were busy fighting the scouts. What you are complaining about can and have never happen. She get a new wand by touching her boyfriend, so? I have seen lamer power-up by yelling a lot how this bad?

Point 2 the plot-hole. All valid points and I may add Chibi Usa is worst character I have seen.

Third, this is part that grating, is calling Sailormoon terrible character for killing herself after the Mamoru got killed. Mamoru did not just get killed, Sailor Moon had to kill a possess Mamoru in self-defense. A fourteen year old girl who only been a hero for few weeks, (thought) she killed someone she loved and hope to saved, that can leave anyone mess up. Yeah she has friends, family, and the duty to protect the world, but even the most battle harden hero would fall into despair just from hearing their love interest died. What would be terrible if Sailor Moon recover right away and Mamoru death had little impact on her, which would be Mary Sue trait. Her getting jealous over chibi-usa, that what normal teenage act when their boyfriend is not playing attention to them, she more than justified since Chibi-bitch was trying to steal Mamoru away. I don’t know what worse you call Usagi a terrible character for these justified flaws or ignoring all the time she been supportive friends and stood up to evil.

Firstly: No, she is a Mary Sue due to the way the show decides to portray her. She also had one-hit kill attacks in the old anime, mind you, but at least she NEEDED help, a LOT of help. The scouts get new powers on this version, but the thing is: THEY DON'T DO ANYTHING. Tell me the last time Burning Mandala did anything? Or Shine Aqua/Snow Illusion? Or anything? The first episodes of the second arc show all of the senshi getting new powers, they try using them on the villain, they fail, they get captured, and to top it off Sailor Moon kills the villain easily while their new attacks on their own titular episodes did absolutely nothing. Venus didn't get captured, but spent all the time doing nothing while Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Kamen saved the day, something they even realized and poked fun at in Act 22. The senshi even tried using their new attacks on Act 22 AGAIN, but just like the last time they've used them, it didn't do nothing... and Sailor Moon saved their ass. Guess what? If Sailor Moon is so OP she is the only one who can kill everyone else while her fellow warriors are struggling to get a scratch from the same enemies she kills... That has undoubtely the vibes of a Mary-Sue. And the fact she can effortlessly generate a new wand by merely touching someone else is as bad written as it can be, which is also an attribute of a Mary-Sue. Keep in mind THE SAME SCENE HAD SHOWED UP ON THE THIRD SEASON OF THE ORIGINAL ANIME and it was a lot, a lot better written than the original source. I don't even know what you're trying to get at. "I've seen lamer power-ups", does that mean you agree Sailor Moon Crystal is bad, but not the worst of its kind?

Secondly: What I mean by saying Usagi is a bad character is her absolute lack of characterization and exaggerated obsession with Mamoru. I understand that she is a teenager, but now that you've touched on the "realistic" side, let me tell you this: No teenager in her sane mind would forget about everything else important to her and be completely nuts over a guy she had met weeks ago (going by your logic of "she's only been a hero for some weeks"). Moreover, no teenager would suicide for it or feel extremely jealous of her boyfriend paying more attention to a child unless she knew he had pedophile tendencies. Better yet, no teenager (OR PERSON) would feel jealous over their own daughter trying to steal her boyfriend/husband. The old anime had decided to remove all of these bad traits of her because they knew she would come off as an unlikeable character. And indeed, she is doing it in this version. And... "Chibi-Bitch"? Why am I even trying to reason with you?

Yes the sailor scout had not been effective, but how many times they fought? TWICE, one against the new villains and big bad in his lair, the arc is not over and you decried that they are useless? If they had won, the threat the villain pose would be smaller, the drama of them being kidnapped would not exist. So you want the Sailor scouts to be OP? Which brings me to Sailor Moon; she may have save them from the Big Bad, but only because she gotten a power boost from her future self and all that accomplish is trashing the villain lair and escaping. Sailor Moon power level is equal to villain so far and you call that OP? OP is when Sailor Moon beat the snot out of everyone without breaking a sweat and ended the threat when she gotten to the lair. What this talk about OP when Sailor Moon is being pressed into the corner all the time? Finally, comparing the old anime is pointless, they had hundred episodes to show off other characters skills and yet in the end it still comes to Sailor Moon had to be the one to defeat the Big Bad. I put into the teenager aspect because a rookie hero having to through a horrible event. “No teenager in her sane mind would forget about everything else important to her and be completely nuts over a guy she had met weeks ago” That what teenager do, have you not read a teen love story or the news? That why we have trope call Love make you crazy/dumb and even adults fall into this furthermore WHAT SANE TEENAGER HAD YOU MET THAT KILL THEIR LOVE INTEREST AND NOT FALL INTO THE DESPAIR EVENT HORIZAN? You ignore what she had to do and Mamoru is not some guy, he is the reincarnation of the earth prince and sailor moon true love and both have their memory return by then so they sort of know each other longer. The series pretty much tell us this whenever they can to drive the point that losing Mamoru would be bad. Sailor Moon getting jealous over Chibi-usa is acceptable since Chibi-Usa come out nowhere ,try to take her crystal, and had some connection to the Black Moon yet Mamoru is always on Chibi-usa side. Remember Sailor Moon didn’t know who Chibi-Usa is until later. However she admits that getting jealous is wrong and promise to be better. Yet according to you she is a terrible character, for breaking down because the death of love one, getting jealous over her future daughter, whom she was not aware of and winning every battles on her own that never happen. So you want everyone else to be OP and Sailor Moon a Mary Sue during emotional situation?

"Yes the sailor scout had not been effective, but how many times they fought? TWICE"

And that in itself is a problem.

The series has ended and I stand still on my opinion, all of it. Nothing has changed at all until the final episode, with exception of course, of Act 25. However, the final episode was so horrible it made me forget how wonderful the previous act was.

Goku is a Marty Stu, but nobody ever complains about him.
