Creepy rather than scary horror adventure

Shadow Of The Comet is a third person adventure game, and one I remember fondly and re-visit on occasion. Although a certain amount of using they keyboard is required, the CD version of the game unlike the disk version, also has full mouse support. I soon got used to switching between the two.

Compared so some of the modern day horror games you wouldn't think an old 1994 VGA graphics game could be all that scary.. but this game honestly did scare me the first time I played it (I was somewhere between 10 and 14 I think when I first played the game)although it starts out gently enough and when I replayed it with my sister watching some time later, while seeming more creepy than scary that time round, it still managed to make us jump a couple of times.

The game is pretty linear but has a good storyline and likable characters. It's also very atmospheric for a game of it's age, and does a good job of pulling the player into the story. It's a reasonably challenging game, and there are also several timed sequences. Again taking into account how old the game is most of the graphics (the background graphics and talking character portraits specifically- NOT the other animations) are quite impressive too. There are many ways to die and it is possible to work yourself into a dead-end, so it's is advisable to save often

The game is obviously designed to run on older computers, but runs perfectly on modern computers via dosbox.

Also included with this game is the programme "A Visit to the Lovecraft Museum" which isn't really a game as such, more an interesting addition for Lovecraft fans where they can wander around a small museum and examine various artifacts from Lovecraft stories.

If you are a fan of old style adventure games, horror, and/or enjoy stories from Lovecraft's mythos, then this game is definitely worth a try.
