If only it were longer...

My attention was first brought to this series by a post on tumblr that mentioned it featured a disabled protagonist. That was already interesting enough, but it was the fact that it was a magical girl anime that really hooked me. I love magical girl anime, and I especially love finding out about new ones.

So I decided to watch it.

While I had conflicted feelings at first, by the last few episodes my opinion of it was overall fairly positive.

Some of the pros are:

  • The art is gorgeous, honestly, and the fight scenes are very well-animated.
  • The characters are all realistic. A little cliche, yes, but likeable, and genuinely good people.
  • The soundtrack is amazing.
  • The voice-acting was very good.
  • The drama near the end was extremely heartfelt.

Some of the cons are:

  • It was too short. The first 8 episodes were standard magical girl anime fare, nothing too dark, but then starting with episode 9, things started going downhill very fast. The problem is, there are only 12 episodes overall. The conflict was extremely rushed as a result, and it wound up resolving itself much faster than was probably intended.
  • Togo's transformation sequence was... gross, honestly.
  • The ending felt very cheap. The girl's disabilities were treated as some tragic thing that would never go away, but they just went away. Especially disappointing was Togo being able to again.
  • The slice of life bits got somewhat boring at times.

In conclusion, I give this anime a B+.
