We Try not to set Patients on Fire

First things first, if you don't like gore or blood, turn back now. This show is not for the faint of heart. Secondly, if you're not a fan of angst-ridden, grumpy anti-heroes, then definitely turn back now. Now that all that jazz is over with, this show is fantastic. If you like medical dramas with equal parts focus on the drama and the medicine, then you'll like this. Every characters finds some way to be fascinating, and the setting, NYC in 1900, makes things especially interesting. At the turn of the century, new medical procedures are being tested. Unfortunately, not all of them work. This is what sets The Knick apart from other medical dramas; the doctors are doing more discovering, experimenting, and (accidentally) killing than healing. And sometimes setting patients on fire. One of the characters, Dr. Algernon Edwards, deserves a special mention. He's a brilliant black doctor trying to work against a racist institution (and coworkers) to save lives. His story is one of many highlights in The Knick. The writing is quite punchy for a period drama, which makes things a bit more fun. Steven Soderbergh's cinematography is riveting to watch, and the soundtrack is pretty cool. Electronic music in a period drama sounds like it shouldn't work, but it does.

Special note: While many have compared this show to House, M.D., the similarities are superficial; the main character is addicted to a drug (cocaine) and is a deadpan snarker. He's actually a much worse person than House is. That being said, if you enjoyed House, you'll like this. Fans of NBC's Hannibal will probably enjoy The Knick as well.
