Not really bad.. But not better than the original.

(Spoilers.) Rio 2 had some funny moments, but it kind of fails over all. I laughed, sure, but this movie left me with quite a few questions. It also felt quite short, I had to ask if it was over because the climax was so unsatisfying that I thought it was the middle. There are two villains in this movie. One, Nigel from the first movie (and friends) comes off as kind of goldfish poop-ish, and the other was so underdeveloped that I had a hard time caring about him. They built him up to be some determined super evil guy, and I ended up expecting a lot out of him. But nope. Eaten by a snake. He tries It also gave me three questions by the end. What happened to Jewel's mom? Why was Roberto freaking out about being a pet? And why was Nigel never able to fly again? Actually, I can answer that last one now. It appears that his feathers were clipped, since there is no mention of eyesight impairment or some other debilitating injury (He can still flap his wings and get slightly airborne, implying his wings work okay. Besides the feather thing.) I thought this might be the case, but it appears his primary flight feathers are fine! Just kind of ruffled. So why? I'm probably getting worked up about something that might not even be the case, so I digress. Blu, Jewel, the kids, and many other characters got almost no character development. The little character development Blu did get felt like it wasn't earned, and he doesn't really achieve much. True, they got rid of the loggers by the end, but I can't believe that the clan of blue macaws would trust Blu enough to let him lead them into battle. This movie felt pretty unnecessary with the emotional resolution from the first one.

The music was pretty nice though.

I completely agree with this review. The movie simply felt too packed. It tried to fit two groups of baddies, (Nigel, and the loggers) three groups on the side of good, (Blu/Jewel, Nico/Pedro/Raphael, And Linda/Tulio) and have them all following different paths to the same destination. Not only that, but tried to shoehorn in dramatic events, the culture of the tribe of Spix Macaws and the region they live in, all while trying to create characterization for all the characters, both new and old.

It's impressive they did as well as they did, actually.

For your first question about Jewel\'s mother, it\'s likely she perished in the wildfire since she isn\'t present and is mentioned only once along the lines of the wildfire incident and even in the junior novel for Rio 2 (which totally explains stuff slightly better) has one moment where Jewel looks at her father where after the mention of her mother possibly where she is, but all he does is give a saddened look that already says to her she\'s gone. It\'s also likely he was traumatized at her death or even the mere mention deeply saddens him which would explain he had a distrust of humans and hid away the tribe in uncharted territory in the Amazon and I guess his harshness to Blu because he associates with humans and any mentions of humans was a factor because of his mate and doesn\'t want any of the tribe members or his own family to go through that pain again.

For Roberto being scared as a pet, It\'s likely he was kept as one because of a deleted scene where he shows Blu a band on his leg that says \"Polly\" and still could likely apply if he still had the band or not. He likely was separated from the flock too when the wildfire happened and was later somehow captured being kept as a pet and treated like a stereotypical pet parrot wanting only crackers and called \"Polly\" for some time from an unspecified human before escaping and finding his way back to the tribe.
