Simply Amazing

The Way is a freeware RPG Maker 2000 game, made by one Lun Calasari. It concerns Rhue, a cynical wanderer who is trying to find a lost love, but gets wrapped up in larger conflicts while doing so.

The best part of this game is the story. While it starts out fairly happy, with many laugh-out-loud moments, it slowly turns darker and darker as Rhue faces misfortune upon misfortune. It's also very mysterious, throwing lots of red herrings at you. Rhue is one of the best protagonists in the video game industry. He is snarky and mean-hearted, yet still manages to be likeable with his sympathetic backstory and humane moments. It's shown that while he doesn't like many people, he cares very much for the people he does like (Traziun and Lexus come to mind). It's heartbreaking to see his quest slowly turn him into a black-hearted monster. By Episode 5, he's perfectly willing to kill women who mess with him.

The rest of the characters are sympathetic and layered. too, with the exception of Cetsa, who just isn't likeable.

The gameplay is fun and addictive. The flow system is simply genius, making you mix and match patterns to get the best combination of immunities. The Plunge is pretty much a more complicated version of rock-paper-scissors, but manages to keep it fresh and unique with Blade Arts, allowing you to form your own strategies and tactics.

While the story is the best part, it is also pretty confusing. You might have to take notes just to keep track of everything, and moments which seemed trivial in early episodes may be very important in later episodes. Don't expect the ending to explain everything.

Simply put, this RPG is awesome. A great cast of characters, some nice backgrounds, well- implemented BG Ms, and a fun combat system, The Way will entertain you the entire time.
