A bit of clarification to my edit to the Internet Backdraft entry.

So there's been a bit of news that a veteran animator feels Gridman "plagiarized" his work. However, regardless of what Mr. Obari and people on the internet feel, it's a misuse of the term. Plagiarism is only relevant in academic research, where citing sources and separating them from original research is paramount. In the arts, which borrow camera angles and scene composition all the time without requiring people to cite sources (cf. the Vertigo Effect), it's irrelevant. That is a large part of the reason why "plagiarism" seems so nebulous and hard to define—people are applying it to things it has no relevance to, like putting a square peg into a round hole. It just does not fit.

I kept the entry because Mr. Obari and others did indeed use the word "plagiarism" (assuming the translation is accurate), but just because somebody has claimed something doesn't mean its correct. That's why copyright infringement (a more accurate term for this situation than "plagiarism") can only be decided by a court of law.
