I'd add to the idiot plot that both of them should have gone in the pod to destroy Calvin at the end. The entire world was at stake and two lives is a necessary sacrifice. There was no reason for her to try to return to Earth. There was too much risk to logically send a potentially contaminated capsule back to Earth, Calvin could have asexually reproduced and hidden on the pod. Send a message then be the damn heroes. But that's just my opinion.
I found this interview with the director of the movie, that seems to suggest the ending to be much less apocalyptic than what everyone thought. In his interpretation, all that time Calvin just wanted to communicate, and now he finally could, having somehow "evolved" in the pod, and this would be why he hasn't killed the last astronaut by the end. Not sure which tropes this could cover, so I'll just put it here. https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/about-the-end-of-life-director-daniel-espinosa-explains-what-happens-next
