Master Hero, regarding Vanilla Protagonist:

  • "Thus, a Vanilla Protagonist is a protagonist whose characteristics and background are plainer or simpler compared to the rest of the cast. This type of protagonist serves as a window by which the audience may experience more varied and colorful supporting characters."
  • "The VP acts as foil for other more unique characters the audience will encounter through them. In other words, the other characters drive the story, and the VP is simply the vehicle. The VP may have no voice for this reason."
  • "Since these characters need to be relatively flat by their own merit, they may be unpopular with the fanbase but simply being unpopular does not make them this trope. It makes them The Scrappy."

We've already got Touya listed under The Scrappy, and it's NO exaggeration to say that every character but him drives the plot. And his background and characters really IS simpler and plainer than most of the cast.

I'm not seeing where my description was wrong.

EDIT: And I'd like to add that I'm one of the few fans I've seen that LIKES Touya. I legitimately like him, but that seems to be the minority consensus.

Touya does fit the VP description, but the trope has been misused in the past to further the negative stereotype of the "generic hero with a wooden personality." I like Touya as well, so I don't want any misinformation in the article.

Well, what's misinformative about my previous entry?

TBH, I'm in no hurry to re-add it, but I do think Vanilla Protagonist describes one of the core complaints about him as a character.

VP is not about complaining, it's about informing that a character is deliberately a blank slate so that viewers can identify with him. Any criticism about Touya goes to The Scrappy entry; but again, that has to be agreed upon by a majority.
