Alright, I am a Yaoi Fangirl, but seriously, am I the only one who sees old-couple vibes from Gobber and Stoick in the way they bicker, support each other and handle Hiccup? Am I justified in wanting to list them as Heterosexual Life-Partners?

I wouldn't complain if you put that up. When Gobber offered to help Stoick I got Heterosexual Life-Partner vibes.

So I tried to point out the flaws in Mako's character... then I was crucified

Did anyone else feel that Stoic's reaction to Hiccup taking off his armor, i.e. whacking the cage with his hammer, wasn't a good idea? He's the best dragon fighter in the village; surely he should have known that whacking the cage would have agitated the Nightmare, who was standing right in front of his defenseless son.

That's the thing about being irrationally angry. It makes you do things that are irrational.

Double Standard: Apparently, Astrid really was entitled to being the best at dragon fighting, and Hiccup actually did steal it from her with all his learning stuff. Or at least the movie never implies that her anger at being shown up is anything but justified.

I know this is YMMV, but the movie seemed a lot less black-and-white than this. Astrid does throw some temper tantrums about Hiccup being better than her, but we as the audience have the advantage of knowing how Hiccup is managing to do this, while she does not. I'd say she was justified in being angry at first. To her, the worst viking in the village suddenly surpassed her in dragon training without any explanation. It broke all the rules of the world as she understood it. And because everyone else in the village seemed to support and congratulate Hiccup on his accomplishment, it looks like Astrid was the only one who believed that Astrid was entitled to being the best at dragon fighting.

Also, Astrid clearly was the best at dragon fighting. Hiccup was the best at dragon training.

Her reaction is less "Dammit I should be the best!" anger and more "Dammit, he sucked at this yesterday, how the hell is he doing this today!?" frustration.

Agreed, it seems more like nagging curiosity as he starts getting better, even before he starts getting better than her.
