Why would anyone take him back - I'd challenge this one. if you look carefully at this clip - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS9SXH3DfT8 - up till 18 seconds in, Danny is reacting honestly, until he's aware of the other T-birds looking pointedly at him not being "cool". He then drops into a "Cool" role (probably cribbed from Marlon Brando's Wild One character and other cultural references (The Wild One was released in about 1957, Grease is set in '59) - that throws Sandy for six.
A massive subtext in the film is the Cool Guy Rules that constrain Danny and Kenickie. Also goes into how they had to suddenly break off their hug after Danny agrees to be Kenickie's second.
