I personally felt something was off regarding her shallow time in the spotlight up until Chapter 128, so when The Reveal finally happened, it didn't come off all that surprising.
The hints are very subtle, but they are there. Hell, even the fact that Kayano is unable to swim could count as a vague hint given Koro's tentacle weaknesses.

Is Kayano having tentacles an Ass Pull? No, it absolutely is not.
Whatever hints may or may not exist, and there is a huge list of potential ones, we also have definitive statements from Shiro that he intended to recruit someone from class E. That alone is sufficient to disqualify it as an Ass Pull.
