Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the designation of the ship also get italicized? I'm pretty sure you write as the HMS Pinafore and not HMS Pinafore. By that logic, it should be the same for Starfleet ships.

Wikipedia doesn't italicize the prefix, and most Star Trek sources don't either. So it should still be U.S.S. Cerritos.
