A theory: the humanoid brain uses holographic energy. Computers, as we understand them today, simply do not "grow". Computers follow very strict laws of causality, and I think it's safe to assume the computers in Star Trek operate on basically the same principals as those today. That said, Holographic AI seem to regularly "grow", learning and adapting at a rate comparable to humans. If the human brain is analogous to a central processor, it would follow that the human mind and active intelligence are a form of holographic energy, and death is the result of the matrix destabilizing, either from damage to hardware or degradation.
