From what I can find, Word Of God merely states that Chell "probably" can talk. Not necessarily true, not necessarily false.

Caroline died in childbirth.

Perhaps in a climactic series of events following the passing of Cave, it came time for Caroline to give birth to young Chell. (She may have been a little old for this theory by this time, but perhaps a recent experiment enabled her to remain fertile, not however, without certain complications.) Aperature Scientists realized she was having problems and rushed her to the Aperture ER, where diligent doctors began surgical procedures and hasty engineers hooked up her brain and monitored as they began the upload of her personality to a computer; as per Cave's dying wishes. Her last memories written onto disk format were those of agonizing pain. She never saw her daughter—now born an orphan and adopted by an employee of the Laboratory, (perhaps Doug Rattman himself, since he knew of Chell's tenacity. He may have even been one of the engineers onsite during the whole tragic episode, and therefore, one of the first to take pity on Chell and volunteer to adopt).

A few years passed, and on that fateful first-annual bring-your-daughter-to-work day—when Chell returned to the Laboratory as a mere child—Caroline was finally uploaded into the completed G La DOS computer system. She awoke with a blood-curdling scream and very little memory of her past life—all that was left of Caroline's personality had been overwhelmed with a powerful surge of emotions and images of blood and of pain and loss.

The Companion Cube is STILL ALIVE, or is MASS PRODUCED: Plenty of Evidence for it, 1) After Incinerating it, backtrack to the begining of the level. A new Companion cube is dropped. 2) YOU SEE IT AT THE END 3) The VALVE-RELEASED comic, LAB RAT on www.thinkwithportals.com shows Rattman with the Companion cube at the time of Glados's Destruction. Besides, It is more than likely just an Aperture Science Weighted Storage Cube. With a paintjob.
