That's not entirety true. Tales Of Phantasia and even the first Star Ocean title has time travel as part of it's plot, and they were critical successes. The only Time Travel/RPG title that failed that I can think of is Enix's RoboTrek, and it failed for a different reason. But yeah, I think that they did more research and saw that this combo can in fact result in good games. It's just that most of them never left Japan, or when they do leave Japan, gets butchered somehow and most of the poor ratings are due to the translation, not the plot.

Regarding Violation of Common Sense: they may have changed it, because I just got done playing and it flagged Time Travel/RPG as a great combo.
