Would the Catalan language spoken in the south-east around Barcelona be treated as a dialect of Spanish, or as a separate language in its own right? Catalan also shades across the Pyrenees into the dialects of French spoken on their side - Languedoc, Occitan, Provençal et c, which are widely variant to standard French and have very close relationships to Spanish.

Why does Mexico have so many dialects while Colombia only has one? Colombia has more dialects than Mexico (over 12). Mixing paisas, rolos, pastusos, costeños, caleños, tolimenses etc. into a single dialect is extremely wrong.
